I bought a second hand DG distributor at the weekend to strip and service. I followed Itchy's photo guide to get the top half apart and all seems ok - needs a new vacuum unit though. It's a C suffix model with dual weights

But the last few posts in this thread seem to be discussing stripping it even further, to clean and lube the weights and base plate. Just wondering if there are any tips for doing that bit.

Just a quick bump ^^^ in case those who have done this before missed it the first time.

In my opinion. theres not enough to service beyong that. Few drops to lube the weights, and baseplate best removed, cleaned thoroughly (ideally polished then greased) - then put back. All of this is a complete waste of time on a points-based dizzy though due to cam and stem wear. Fine with electronic ones unless wear is really bad.

Stripped probably hundreds in 30 years and also used to have a mate who could make new cams etc but not cost effective now. Cheaper to buy a good copy.

Thanks Ralph - I thought it might be easier to give the mechanism a good clean if it was removed from the housing, and presumably the shaft lifts out with the mechanism so I could give that a bit of a polish too. I've been advised not to remove the bit on the base of the shaft that locates into the drive gear, but for the life of me I can't remember the reason given, and it looks to me like that's the only way to get the mechanism out.
