The connections supply is a 12v supply to the choke heater. After a few minutes they warm up the bi-metallic coil and the chokes come off. If the wire isn't connected the choke flap doesn't open and that carb runs rich all the time.
Unless someone has rotated the choke housing so that the choke flap is permanently open and then the 12v supply isn't needed. With the choke flap "fixed" open the van would still start but would need a bit of tickling on the throttle to get it running.

it starts up fine don't need to blip the pedal !

if I should find the wire should I put it back on ?

also if its running rich could this be the cause of the 55mph top speed ?

will look in the morning

1. if I find it and I put it on and lets say worse case scenario the choke has been rotated am I going to cause damage reconnecting the wire ?

2.if i cant find the wire what can be done ? ie how to fix ?

3.Many thanks for all your answers so far 8)

The missing wire should be daisy chained off the left hand carb. The fuel solenoids & chokes all use the same ignition live supply. If you take off the air-box the choke flaps should be closed on a cold engine. If you switch on the ignition the card flaps should slowly open (go upright) over about 2-3 minutes. I doubt someone have disabled one choke and not the other. The wire will be there somewhere.

If it is connected to the same wire connected to the other auto choke which your photo shows is connected up to, which it looks like.

It should not be connected to something else. It looks simply that it has fallen off and is lying there somewhere. Let us know the result. Good luck tomorrow and a faster drive.

Connect it up give it a good run on a bit of motorway and see what happens. See how fast it will go. It should suddenly run faster. Basically engines run on air. The fuel is there to help the air burn. When a carb is running on pure fuel it is wasting petrol and there's no air going through and it slows you down. If you only had one carb the lack of air would have caused your engine to stall every time you stopped. I think that we have found the problem.
Good luck.

the mystery deepens !

I found the wire (hooray) it had been cable tied back with electrical tape over the top bit ! This has been done purposely for sure, I have reattached to the choke heater took it for a spin and runs okay (will take on Mway later)

Why would this have been taken off on purpose ? (petrol pump electronic ignition etc )

Can I cause damage by reconnecting it ? (faulty choke heater ?!?)
