As possibly one of the earlier conversions done it has proven reliable over quite a long period. Heavy van, big pay load and tested thoroughly. The only problems I have had have been to do with oil leaks. Duff turbo followed by a stress fracture in the oil feed pipe, everything else has been routine maintenance.
I know it wont be an issue Mark, but as a proven vehicle with many many actual miles traveled, I have to cross reference what has been randomly thrown out there. How have your injectors been?

Drove to Russian border with a rear mounted intercooler with no problems so not suggesting it is an issue. Just want to improve/evolve/research/insert appropriate word.

I had my roof rack fitted and light bar this time as well as a set of Insa Turbo Dakar tyres (same patten than the old BFG m/t's) and fully loaded with water, food, beers etc to be self sufficient for two nights in the wilds.
34.18mpg I have got to be happy with that

Jed I seem to recall you stating that you were getting 35mpg from your old AAZ many moons ago

I used to get 30mpg on a long run on a motorway doing 60mph falling down to 40mph on the longer hills and would have been quite happy for it not to blow up. The recent MPG on the AFN was a mixture of Strata Florida, Welsh country roads without having to change gear much, and motorway driving that was in 4th gear the whole time and accelerating safely past the trucks up the hills at 65mph. Oh and on mud tyres not A/T's
I seem to recall you stating that Westfalia's and 16" vans were c**p.....
Never had any issues with the injectors. As I said, I know Stewart had the engine overhauled when he got back to the UK; piston damaged due to some poor fuel picked up in the back end of nowhere was what I was told at the time.
When I was given the boxes of spares he had dragged around in his trailer he remarked that the set up had been so reliable he didn't need to use anything while travelling.
I have to concur on the reliability, Since we put the mTDi into my van 4ish years ago, all I have done is change the oil and fuel filter - it has done some hard miles, Sahara and back, over the pyrenees and back, loads of trips to Cornwall, Scotland, Germany, plenty of greenlane - just miles of diesel fuelled smiles
Only now has the engine given up (and only the head gasket) and it was second hand when it went in - I am considering sending the injectors off for a clean http://injectortune.co.uk/ whilst it is off the road and waits the new engine. OR running this through on the old engine to clean the injection system..

i've been using the westy to commute to and from work plus some motorway driving. Not trying to achieve good MPG figures, just enjoying driving it. Just filled up and got 37.6 MPG!!!!
Ive never heard of injector issues on a VW diesel and having run them in their intended installations for many hundreds of thousands of miles I would have thought that VW diesels were among the most reliable if looked after as per VW guidelines.
Having said that there are injector issues with the current 2.0 litre 170 engine which VW have admitted to and are sorting. These are the new hi tech injectors and faults started to show in Seats first before spreading to the whole range
And to add some appreciation, not just for the AFN, but also for Jed. He kindly took me for a spin yesterday and I can tell you that the AFn is definately the way forward. Plenty of torque and surprisingly quiet too

Great to meet you fella
Interesting to hear the comparison with your 160bhp petrol engine and how you thought the AFN was miles quieter, smoother and more powerful. You wont miss the 20mpg you are getting at the moment and I bet with your tyres and box set up on a 2wd you should be getting a 40mpg return from an AFN. It will pay for itself in no time
You might have to put one of those free gloves on at the pump though to stop you getting a slightly smelly hand so its not all good news

I'm going to have to retract this MPG figure. I have a faulty fuel gauge and even when full it doesn't read over 3/4.
Even though the pump clicked off 3 times it turns out the tank wasn't full.
