A bullbar (also roo bar or nudge bar in Australia) is a device fitted to the front of a vehicle to protect it and its passengers from damage in a collision with an animal. They vary considerably in size and form, and are usually made of welded steel or aluminium tubing, and, more recently, moulded polycarbonate and polyethylene materials. Due to the number of deaths and injuries caused by the rigid fronts of cars, often with metal bullbars (in 2000 some 2,000 deaths/year and 18,000 serious accidents/year in Europe [1]), the sale of metal bullbars was banned by a European Union Directive.[2]

Studies have shown bull bars to cause an increase in the risk of death and serious injury to pedestrians.[3]

Let's take 12 years report 1999-2010

3,266,854 Road casulities

36,371 deaths

373,985 Serious injuries

2,856,498 light injuries

And the bulk of these where post 2002 when metal bullbars were banned and new cars aren't fitted with them.

Just a little side addition from yours truly on this awesome thread

Its easy to copy and paste something from Wikipedia to make something look less than ideal but "facts" on there are to general to really be of any relevance. For example, have a look at this van

Basically the fella who owns it swerved on a gravel road to avoid two dears and it rolled the van with him in it  This year I plan to drive up to the Arctic Circle and I will 100% no shadow of a doubt be fitting my set of bull bars for the journey because when/if something like a dear is stood in front of my van on a road I plan on driving through the animal and not swerving and rolling my van on its roof with my family inside. They will be removed when I get back to the UK but when I go to North Africa next winter they will be fitted back on the van to take out any wandering goats, dogs or sheep (Andrew Fendik took a dog out in Morocco from the stories I have heard, and Russel finished it off  ) . If I ever go back to Croatia or drive through any city in Italy I will also be fitting the bull bars. To assume that bull bars are dangerous is foolish as they are infact safer than not having in many occasions, especially if you use your Syncro.

If the fella on The Samba had a set of bull bars fitted and drove into the deer while safely slowing down then he wouldnt have rolled his van and would be looking at a new windscreen worse case scenario.

Yeh I know, I have been planning a route over the last few weeks, even hitting a fox at 60mph is going to do some damage if I dont have one. We are planning to seek out the last wilderness areas in Europe so the odd collision is inevitable.

Basically I bought one of those job lot of parts you see now and again on the forum, kind of "clearing my garage out everything must go" kind of thing. Anyway it had loads of odds and sods and part of the bundle was a set of bull bars, they are not a set of T25 bull bars but have been adapted to fit with a kind of quick fit operation via brackets that double up as a safe towing point.

Here are the brackets that double up as a safe towing/snatch ( ) point

And you just pop the two bolts through the holes to fit the bars, it really does take 10 minutes to swap them,

Fitted,

Not pretty but a useful tool.
