I would always go to the MOT with only about two gallons of diesel in the tank so I would add half a gallon of petrol and drive flat out to the MOT station. Works wonders for smoke and emissions! After the test Id fill the tank to the brim with Diesel and go for a run. Longterm messing with petrol will damage the engine but its ok for the few miles involved with getting it through the MOT.

But you shouldn't need to do anything like that, the mot smoke test is quite forgiving and most old diesels get by ok.

Cooper

remove the filter sylinder end-cap (itself has to be cleaned, being the Cylcone part of filter that picks up big stuff, grit, leaves twigs etc)

then undo the nut on the prjecting rod and withdraw the cylindrical filter element

Check by if possible looking down the filter casing that there isn't muck still in there

Look at the filter elemnt, and tap it a round, look inside to see how clean it was when new and outside to see how clean it is now, If say almost greasy dirt, black or abs. full of fine dirt, replace (cheap at GSF)
If a bit dry dirty knock it around a bit, brush with a stiff brush, and/or blow out with an airline. But they should only b about £8 ~£12 @ GSF (make sure you order a T3 TD cylinder filter

As everyone says, if you get the oil level right and cane it about a bit when hot, and then take it in, without sharp turns or hill-climbing, it should pass the rev-up test ('smoke' test)

If not then we can alwasy just back the fuel-screw in a bit for the test...

Mine's bad but alwasy passes, tell them thety MUST get it really hot and only test FTER a good blast up the road,a nd they are allowed to do it 3 times to get the best of 3 three

It may not be the washer pump istelf, but the worong or the pickup for it. This is accessed underneath the passenger floor. Check the fuse first too.

Good luck

Hehehe .... have a look at our NCT test - emissions section!

We can fail an NCT test if our idle speed is +/- 100 rpm off the Manufacturers Setting!!

So i can tell the machanic testing it what to do.?

a) Check his testing procedures are correct for TD's (just a smoke test). he should have asked you when the cambelt was last changed, as they rev it up to governor once or twice first (or should do) and if the cambelt is out of date or miles, and it breaks, it would then be your responsibility

b) YOU should give it a thorough drive and warmup before taking it in to clear it out, but not an almighty thrashing. No swinging it around right-handers before dropping off (that could leave oil in the turbo air of its bearings)

c) Smile nicely
