for final rub down i was gonna use 1200, tried it yesterday and didnt take long to get a glass smooth finnish. im using 600 for cutting back after 1st and 2nd coat so far onl;y gone through on a small section where a weld was slightly raised.

Finally got to paint the front yesterday. Bloody weather, its been weeks since I've been able to paint.

Anotherone painting yesterday
Got my second coat on yesterday, looking good.
I was geting lots of air in the paint, roller had been soaked and worked on some ply before i started.
Might have mixed it a bit thin or could be crap rollers.
All the bubbles came out afetr a bit of light rollering so well chuffed

I had the same problem loaded the roller as stated but still was getting bubbles, my girlfriend followed behind me with a brush and gentle dragged it across and the bubbles dispersed.

Well, after a year in the planning, we finally got a first coat on at the weekend. (Big thanks to my wife for finding a friendly farmer with a dry barn just in the nick of time). Now, here's a tip - don't start painting when you're hungry, knackered and over eager! I put twice the volume of thinner in as I meant to and had bright green paint running off the roof over the windows... (I was nearly in tears). However, even going from dark matt red to bright green and after a fairly rough first coat, we can't stop smiling when we see the van - shiny already and a neighbour asking if I sprayed it myself!!! Great paint. Hoping the Sussex weather sorts itself out and I can flat and get 2nd coat on in 2 weeks time.

tou might be pushing it in 2 weeks. i tried mine just after 2 weeks and was rubbing up.
Ive decided to leave it at least 3 weeks now before even trying to rub it back.
Not worth trying to rush it and having to start again

I'm planning my first layer this weekend (1015 for top half, 3000 for bottom). I'm going from a purpley blue, but I'm hoping rustoleum coverage is as good as I've heard.

Also, what sort of percentage thinners should I be using at this time of year? I'm going to aim to start painting at about 6.30 am to avoid heat, plus it's indoors.

Oh, and I'm going to watch my DVD again today, BUT... I just wanted to double check... How do I prep the van BEFORE I use wet and dry? Sand down entirely with 600?

Rustbucket - the coverage is pretty good especially when you get the dilution right. We did 2 coats with the 2nd quite a lot thicker than the first after some experimentation (better to go by look and feel rather than sticking rigidly to a set ratio as you can take weather conditions etc into account). Hmmm. after this mornings event, looks like I'll need to do some major re-rollering to mine although to be fair its been on there 6 years. I just came off a small roundabout and a dizzy woman on a pushbike decided to ride off the pavement straight into the side of me!!!

Great big handlebar scratch to one side. Fortunately said cyclist was not injured, which to be honest is all that concerned me at the time. Having checked her over for serious damage and a minor restraightening of the front of her bike, I left her to it. Entirely her fault but no point making her day any worse by trying to fleece her for the damage caused to my vehicle. Live and let live thankfully. Hope she's not too bruised tomorrow - I did feel sorry for her. A momentary lapse of concentration on her part (which she did apologise for) and my last minute swerve saved her from ending up under my wheels.

Great job. Is it polished up or is it just shiney and clean new paint?
