Windscreen washer pump.
Offside (tailpipe) exhaust has leak of gases.
Exhaust has excess level of smoke

So new pump, new air filter, repair exhaust.

:)

You let it go to the test with no washer pump? Excess level of smoke over here means your engine is fecked ....

Washer pump was on van just didnt work.

What they said was, exhaust emits excess level of metered smoke for a turbo charged engine.

going by your other thread of turbo leaking oil, the smoke coming out the exhaust could be oil?

For an older diesel to fail the mot smoke test it has to be real bad....I suspect the test was not carried out correctly, was it left ticking over for ages? A good thrashing will normally shift most of the soot and allow a warmed up engine to pass its test, if not, take the LDA pipe off and try again....if non of those work its maybe had it.

my old jx passed when the turbo was really bad. no exaggeration, you could not see out the rear window on the way to the mot station. The trick with mine was to let it get up to temp and ignore the smoke cloud, then engine off then on again and it wouldnt smoke for about 20 mins

The thin pipe to the top of the injector pump from the inlet manifold.

You don't need to try a filter to know if that's the problem...take it out and look at it, if it looks fairly ok...it's ok! Try revving it up with no filter fitted and that will rile out the filter... Is there heavy white smoke...a bit of general smoke...how is it on the road? How's the timing? Is the oil level correct andits the dipstickreadingproperly (I bet it isn't...only way to know is dump out the oil and start again)

My old girl smokes like mad if the oil level is even a couple of mm over the level on the re marked dipstick...

When i first start the van up there is white smoke for approx 3 seconds then no smoke driving it.

Changed oil 2months ago.
Oil level is fine.

Dont know how to check the timing.

that sounds normal, did it smoke a lot at the test? get them to test it as soon as you pull in, most mot places do it last

Oil level is fine.
When you say oil level is fine...how do you know the dipstick s correct? Did you measure the oil before it went in?
