I have been away for a couple of days (Welshpool air show + 2 nights camping ) - Glad to see you have made some progress at last I have "speed read" the recent posts, just to summarise, I take it it was a combination of leads on wrong and duff battery then ?

Yep, original issue was a blocked fuel line & fuel filter and a fuel pump seal that went, but fixed those before I came to this board
Sorry was just being pedantic to try to save some self dignity. But yes your right
Resolved white smoke issue too; nuts holding cam cover on where shot, got some more & also drained some oil from the sump (was on the high side) and thats gone, we have a squeak on from roughly the alternator area but just going to take to a friendly garage and ask them at this point

The squeak might be the coolant pump about to pack up.
You could try holding the pulley firmly and seeing if it has any play. I've been carrying a new one for over a year because it sometimes 'wobbles' a little bit and then disappears, I'll get around to changing it one day - honest.
Why would the glass be anything other than half full?
Also the pump should have a small hole underneath the shaft - if there is a stain from water/rust from it the shaft seal is starting to go, it may last many more miles or it could fail soon (only the VW god knows! )

The pump is mounted directly onto the top of the sump (ADZ engine mounted at an angle in the rear of a t25), will have a look tomorrow when its light & im sober though
*E D I T** then again I been wrong so many times with this vehicle so far what I think is the coolant pump may well be the AC (j/k the A/c is crank operated window )
Been going through places like eurocarparts / gsf looking at replacement parts & have an issue I am sure one of you wise person can answer me;
The Engine is indeed a 1.8 R4 ADZ - but what sort of vehicle did these come out of? Need to ask as both the afore mentioned sites work via make/model instead of a sensible searching system.

Not entirely convinced you're on TDC chap.
Although pic is a bit fuzzy, you should see a notch/indent lining up with the pointer. Looks like pointer is lined up with a 'sticky out bit'
Look at this pic
Bottom right of pic, you can see the notch between the two horns? If you line the notch up properly you shouldn't be able to see anything else through the inspection hole.
In your pic you can see the clutch pressure plate curving back round to touch the flywheel, again consistent with wrong points being lined up.
