sealing surfaces where wet sealant is used brake cleaner or meths
everything else thats oily paraffin is fine

brake cleaner gets stuff too clean it will rust overnight

Quite right Roger. I found some today.

Cheers Paul, i use ipa for degreasing but as you say it's too much for bits that need an oily film of protection.
I also needed a cleaner I can buy by the gallon to properly flush the crap out, brake cleaner by the gallon, if available, would be expensive. :ok

More bits arrived today. Yipee. Thanks again Paul.

Aye, don't be confusing Isopropyly alcohol with India Pale Ale.
The ale would rust your engine and the iso would turn you blind. :shock:

Ok. Next question for you guys who've done this before....
What sealants are for what?
Specifically, what do i use to join the case halves? The oil pickup tube? The head water seal?
Round the head nuts is the yellow stuff I think?
I have what came with the Elring kit- 2 x Dirko-s and 1 x unmarked tube of yellow stuff.
Is that all I need?

Cheers mate.
got them on order. :ok
pressed my new con rod bolts in this morning.
Stood and stared at it again, I do a lot of that. :lol:

Main/big end/camshaft bearings now in.
Con rods fitted and crank and cam shafts dropped in position with liberal oiling, all turning nice and smoothe.

I was sat on the tailgate of my pickup, happily cleaning my pistons in the sunshine while listening to the neighbours taste in rock.
My kind of sunday. :ok
Back to work tomorrow for a rest.

Once its finished the satisfaction is worth the time and effort.
When I was overtaking vans at 70mph up a long hill yesterday with my foot on the floor I thought about all the work that went in and did it with confidence , lots of folk too scared to drive fast in case the engine goes bang where is the fun in that?

Looking forward to being back on the road without worrying when the engine's gonna let go.

Looking forward to the thread Bob - I’ll get that barrel out to you tomorrow mate!

Also might be worth getting some graphite paste as you can put this on valve stems, pistons etc as it helps with that initial first time start up when there’s no oil in the case. Mate who did my engine rebuilds lorry engines and swears by it.

Funny that, I just spotted my anti scuff paste on the shelf earlier today. Wondered where it was :)

I get 5 litres brake cleaner for about £12, but I also have the spray dispenser. Expensive stuff in an aerosol.

ZDDP is also reccomended for a rebuild
camshield VWH sell it but its not cheap modern oils don't have enough because it kills cats, I spent a while working out how much is needed and think you could use 1/2 a bottle on initial and the other half after your 500 mile oil change.

I'm going to use it on my current DJ as it has new cam and followers that need to bed in.
if you fit cam or followers you need to do a break in session but you havent.

You need to bed the rings in though no stready revs up and down as much as possible.

Not sure I share that view. ZDDP is an anti wear additive, that's not what you want in a new engine as you need components, especially rings to bed in on the bores.

You can buy specific running in oils eg http://www.millersoils.co.uk/products/r ... in-oil/523, and a standard mineral is better than a synthetic for running in as it isn't as "slippy".

Definitely agree on the running in process, no labouring, vary the revs and load

I'm pretty sure that milers oil will have high levels of ZDDP

all oil used to have much higher levels so I don't believe it will harm your rings break in.
