Check your throttle position switch. It has a two pin plug which is bolted to the rhs of the manifold behind the alternator. Listen first for the click of the switch when you just crack the throttle (engine off) and then again for the (very little) click at wide open throttle. The click is a good sign, but to check further you will need a meter on resistance setting. Unplug the throttle switch wire (small white plastic plug) and check the operation of the switch. Should be (iirc) open at throttle closed and throttle wide open, and closed circuit everywhere else. The throttle switch closed position fires all the associated idle control gubbins, and if the throttle switch is not working you will get no alternator or power steering idle compensation.

Dont forget to check the operation of the power steering sender. Two wires on the pump which tell the idle stabiliser to give it some beans. Your problem could just be that sender is knackered. Haynes and Bentley will have the test procedure. The sender looks like an oil pressure switch (because it is) but has two wires not one.

Hope this helps.

Simon.

Also new fluid makes a massive difference. There is a filter in the top up reservoir which if clogged makes the steering noisy and heavy.

disconnect the rubber joiner in the middle on the low pressure hose - I have this hose in stock if required as it's a very VW non standard size and 1/2" hydraulic hose doesn't work ime
