The problem with recommending places over there is that there is so much choice in so many places. For my first several visits I just set off and stopped whenever I felt like it which was easy as I was then able to avoid July and August which does require booking camp sites in advance in more popular (busy) places.
Do you want moutains, forests, sea, sites with play areas for kids etc? I would recommend just about everywhere along the French coastline and also everywhere South of Paris. Get a good Michelin road atlas and camp site book and leaf through quietly over several days with several cups of tea. Then if you need to you can check places out and follow up/book via the web. If you can avoid July and August you should not need to book in advance as if one site happened to be busy there is usually another site within a few miles provided that you don't go somehere too remote. And if you do not like a site you can move on the next day and find another one. Explore and enjoy.

i really likea lot of areas near limouge- it's their lake district, apparently- go to see a place called Oradour- haunting stuff, but the smalls towns in the area are lovely and it's about 4 hours from Le Havre (8 in my old bay window!)
I did not spot this last time around. This is my part of France. Villefranche-de-Rouerge is the nearest big town to where we go every Summer. If you pass by there give Najac a visit. Some of the buildings in the main street there have been lived in for about 800 years. The church is about the same age. Richard the Lionheart was also up to some dodgy deeds up at the castle too. Take a walk/climb up to the castle. If you make it that far then climb up the tower and get a view of the river valley below. Stunning. Then have a beer or ice cream on the way back.
I can't wait to get back to the sun and warm and smells of the area in August. I'm dribbling again.
