If you're really stuck, it's perfectly possible to drive the van as it is. Put it in gear then just start the engine, and away you go. With a little practice getting the revs right you can change gear quite easily. To stop, slip it out of gear and drift to a halt. OK for motorways BUT absolutely no hill starts or traffic jams!!!!!

Re: major clutch issue, stuck in italy.. PLEASE HELP SOMEONE.
hi colin, i really don't think that is an option.. if i were to drive it, it would be over considerably long distances, and my clutch fluid would surely drain out every time i stepped on the clutch . .
the guys at the vw garage did have it moving but then couldn't keep it going . . and also i think when the engine is running it won't allow me to change gear . . i can only change gear when the engine is off . .
however, as you say, only if i'm really stuck... and now that i'm with my family i am in safe hands.. so i'm looking to get it fixed up and on the road again in the next couple of weeks . . no rush . .

Can be done, pulling out gear just as you drop the throttle and load comes off drivetrain. No prob on a more traditional drivetrain... some are easier than using a clutch
BUT
Not a good idea to stress a T25 gearbox, they aren't the strongest, or easiest changers anyway... so unless Rommel's artillery is coming over the nearest hill (or in today's parlance, that'd be Qaddafi's rocket-ware), I'd give it a miss.
