It could be the idling stabiliser which modifies the hall sender signal. Disconnect it and plug the wires together.

we tried that before I went away but the tickover was really ropey so we put it back as it was

Try the wiggle test...run engine and wiggle wires in engine bay...if cuts out could well be a loose connection or broken wire :wink:

If it fails you loose the spark, so you will have to try running without it to check.
