Thanks for all the replies, interesting stuff and I have taken all your comments on board and yes Ringo it is actually all your fault for advising me to fit the 1Y in the first place. I will think about the turbo thing next closed season,s project but until then I will go for the wheel size change. Not allowed to play at the minute as I have to finnish off the new bathroom.... nowhere near as much fun as playing with my van and come to think of it I actually spend more time in the van than I do in the loo

my future thing will be the 4 speed box with 4.83 final drive.whats the point of a lower first if it only lasts till 5-10 mph perhaps they were given this gear to pull away with a ton of weight in the back
am i right in thinking that diesels have more torque at lower to mid revs?
if this is the case then with a better box the lower revs at 60 mph might help towards pull uphill and thus no need to change down..i fink
