Re: VAN WON'T START AFTER FUEL PUMP CHANGE...HELP!!
Hi Alex,
Thanks for that. I've looked on those sites and can't find the fuel cut off. I've managed to scrape back the plastic around the wire as you suggested, but it's only revealed a couple of mm. I'll have to get my Dad on the job with his soldering iron (I've not got one!).
I'm really going to have to get the tank and fuel hoses connected back up before I can go any further on this. Ian suggests I revert to a Pierburg, but as with you, this came with the van and has been working ok (apart from the kangarooing which probably isn't to do with the carb).
I've been really shafted with this van. It's a 1985 1.9 which was a DG with a Pierburg, but was swapped for a DF engine with a Weber. Looking around at the fuel hose in the engine bay it's all wrong. I've got 8mm hose going from the fuel pump to the carb!!
The engine's a mess....the bodywork/paintwork is even worse!! When we get the chance to go away in her though we love it. We really like the camaraderie with other campers on the road.
I really hope I can get this sorted. MOT is at the end of next month, and we're supposed to be going to Newquay in July. Got to get it off the drive first!!!

Hi Ian,
Thanks for the advice mate. Do you know where I'd get a good second hand Pierburg from? I've been had with this van....I don't want to make a habit of it!!!

Re: VAN WON'T START AFTER FUEL PUMP CHANGE...HELP!!
Hi,
Give them a ring and talk to them - I beleive both of them have them.
The kangarooing may or may not be the carb. It isn't however the reason the van won't start now. Get the van running, and then worry if any other issues warrent the replacement of the carb.
The Weber has an 8mm inlet, so you will need 8mm hose. You will need a reducer to go in the fuel line as the pump outlet is probably smaller.
But this forum will help you fix it!
Cheers,
Alex

Both have the inlet manifold, you may need a 'beret' (the black cap thing on the top of the carb)
We've all had hard times with our vans, that's what comes with owning 20-odd year old vehicles BUT that's also what makes the good times worth it.

Re: VAN WON'T START AFTER FUEL PUMP CHANGE...HELP!!
Hi all,
I'm currently trying (and failing!) to get the fuel tank off as it's shot to pieces. It's so rusty it just flakes off in your hand. Managed to shear off one of the rusted in bolts holding the supports on yesterday, but the other one won't budge. It's in such a difficult place and the bolt is completely rounded off. I'll have another go tomorrow. Been getting a petrol smell for ages and I think the breathers on top of the tank is where it might be coming from. The ring holding the fuel filler on was completely rusted through, so I doubt the fuel tank has ever been off!
Replaced the fuel lines font to back, so once I get a new tank on I can start to sort the fuel pump issues again. Managed to solder the wire back on to the fuel cut off on the carb so hopefully that'll be ok for a while.
These things are so frustrating, but gradually there are new shiny parts appearing and I know that we'll really enjoy being out and about in her again once she's up and running.
Thanks everyone for your continued support.....I need it!!!
Cord.

Re: VAN WON'T START AFTER FUEL PUMP CHANGE...HELP!!
All the frustration is worth it in the end honestly. A few days ago I decided to finally replace the exhaust tail-pipe on my van that had bio-degraded over the winter. Three bolts = 10 minute job? No, two days and counting.
Sprayed Plus-Gas, made a cup of tea. Applied socket - no way is that bolt going to budge. Found impact driver and socket - oh look rounded heads! Drove to mate's garage to borrow weird spiral cut sockets for removing rounded bolts - oh dear really rounded heads! Drove into town to buy 8mm colbalt drill bit. Zizzzzzz, zizzzzzz, zizzzzzz, - no heads at all!!!!!!! Prised off the remains of the tail-pipe flange - now we're getting somewhere. Apply mole-grips to shank of bolt - would be better off using a real live mole to try to grip the bolts? More Plus-Gas and tea. Drive back in town to invest in proper Irwin vice grips instead of Poundland ones. Apply vice grips - shear the bolt shank off flush with the silencer flange - b*ll*cks! "Right you b*astards bolts you're getting a 8mm colbalt drill right up the chuff" - Zizzz---z---z-----z------z oh the battery's flat in the drill. White flag time.

I'm feeling your pain there mate. My tailpipe is just the same. It's being held on with one good bolt at the moment. That's a job for another day.
I guess no one said it was gonna be easy.......Good job we've got our own support group isn't it?!!

Re: VAN WON'T START AFTER FUEL PUMP CHANGE...HELP!!
Cheers Mocki....I'll try that once I've got the new tank all rigged up again. The old one was shot to bits. Rusty as hell and the breather pipes totally perished. I think that's where the petrol smell may have been coming from.
Picking a new tank up from GSF on Saturday, and a new fuel sender as the contacts on that were snapped off and corroded. £69.50 for the new tank from GSF with the club discount. That beats the £118 + postage that JK wanted!!!

Re: VAN WON'T START AFTER FUEL PUMP CHANGE...HELP!!
Hi,
I read somewhere on another thread that the cause of 'kangarooing' or fuel starvation could be caused by the breather in the petrol cap being blocked. on the inside of my petrol cap is says 'NON VENTED'....Could this be part of the problem? I don't know if this is the correct cap as it came with the van when I bought it, but I'm reluctant to spend £25 on a new cap if this is ok.
Currently struggling big time to fit the new GSF petrol tank. It won't fit flush on the driver's side, plus, I had to grind the old bolts off as they were totally rusted on, now I can't get new bolts to tighten up as you can't get a spanner to the top bolt/nut as there isn't the room!!!
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Cord.

Re: VAN WON'T START AFTER FUEL PUMP CHANGE...HELP!!
rivnuts will anwser your spinning nut problem.....
fuel tanks are a git to refit, its never a enjoyable job.....
the breathing of the tank through the filler is easy to dianose, if it is struggling, just take the cap off, if it "hisses" is got vacume, and even if it makes no noise taking the cap off it will solve the running thing if it is that - but i think it isnt, as you said the pipes were perished, so it wouldnt hold vacume anyway

Re: VAN WON'T START AFTER FUEL PUMP CHANGE...HELP!!
Cheers Steve. Me and my Dad eventually managed to get the new tank on successfully today. I didn't realize my arm could bend in so many different directions!!
Still wouldn't start with the new fuel pump though, so put the old one back on and after sucking some petrol through the pipe she started up again (1st time in weeks!). Will have a run out this weekend to see if the 'kangarooing' problem still exists.
Just glad that I've not got to be laying under it again for a good few days.....fingers crossed!!

Re: VAN WON'T START AFTER FUEL PUMP CHANGE...HELP!!
Hi all,
Took the van out for a run yesterday. It was fine for a good 30-40 miles, no kangarooing at all, then it just started cutting out at roundabouts/junctions, whenever I put my foot on the brake. Parked up for a couple of hours and it was still cutting out when we set off again.
Strange thing happened though....It had just cut out, two red lights on the dash, then I went over a ramp in the road and it came back to life again!! Wierd! Stalled again at a couple more roundabouts then was fine all the way home. I hate these intermittent problems! Could it be the brake servo pipe?
More pressing issues now...came out this morning to a puddle of coolant on the drive. When will it all end? MOT next week!!!!

argh....... so this bump, switched off the engine, and you looked down and ignition lights were on?
check the feed wire to the coil ( green) and the plug in the bottom of the ignition amp ( in rhs corner of engine bay on side wall with large plug in bottom with a wire spring retaining clip)
