GSF do em. Its just a small hollow cylinder, usually made of phosphor bronze. Known as starter motor bush. Contrary to opinion, you can get a lazy starter too, at which time its time for a new one but as pointed out, starters face the elements, particularly in driving rain leading to corrosion of terminals. Good earth essential too. The small braided wire between solenoid and starter can also corrode giving intermittent symptoms..

I'm just really suprised someone didn't point this out to you sooner, it is a really common problem.
and pleased it's now sorted.
Obviouslt there are other causes as well but this oilite bushes are somewhere high on the list when slow cranking is reported.

I've been reading this thread with interest, as I have been having problems starting my van.

It seems to start from cold all the time. But sometimes (once a week perhaps) if I stop for a bit, then try to start, it fails tio start. Sometimes I hear a whirring noise from the starter, sometimes it nearly catches but doesn't. then after 5 to 10 attempts of this, it will start.

Last week was even worse. It took approx 30 attempts to start.

I've bitten the bullet and took the Starter motor off this morning (lots of fun in the rain). I was hoping to get it refurbished in a local place, but the guy is on holiday, so I was going to buy a new one instead.

However, reading about the bush, I am just wondering if a new bush may solve the intermittent starting problem as opposed to a whole new starter motor??

Or perhaps the problem is due to corroded connections???

Cheers,
Jason

tetleysid wrote:My 2.1 wasser boxer does it too and sometimes will not even start when its hot. I am not prepared to accept that its normal as VW could never market them as such so I cleaned all the earths and live conections, removed the starter motor and checked the bushes(OK) set the ignition timing spot on etc but the swine stil does it :(
Looks like a new starter and maybe battery on the horizon methinks :?

Hot Start (or not) I had heard that it is a dirty solenoid, that expands and causes hot start trouble.
I have it, and after the odd hour of engine off she starts first go!

I will be cleaning starter motor next.

P.S. she got me down to Weymouth and back, down to New Forest and back and "hot start" broke down at top of slight incline, we live at bottom of inlcine, coasted home down hill and parked up outside house, bless her :D

I had this problem many years ago on my 2.0 air cooled cu. Mechanic reckoned it was solenoid at fault. I replaced starter complete with solenoid without any further probs.

Hope this helps,
Ronnie

mine did this (1y engine) lived with it for about a year until then it was killing the battery
so starter off reconditioned 125 euro lighter no more problems starts like a new car
i would suggest getting yours reconed if it original (bosh or is it lucas) as i was told these after market
one's are Chinese crap and wont last...also if the wire from solenoid to back of starter is bare wire wrap
it even electric tape is better than nothing
