Re: engine hesitating, not idleing properly cutting out at the l
This could be a number of problems from blocked fuel filter to the fuel cut off switch cable coming adrift. However, last year I had a similar problem to yours. This turned out to be a short earthing cable from the carb coming adrift from the engine casing. Good luck.

Elmo, if it's "poppin" have a look at the right hand rear corner of the engine bay when it's running. Like 81AirCooled said there's a metal balance pipe that connects to the bottom of the right hand carb with a rubber elbow. If this has come off the engine will cut out at idle or run really rough. If you look when its running you'll probably see a blue flame like a blow torch flame "poppin" out where the pipe is disconnected.

i have checked this part and it is still connected although it does have black tape wrapped round it so maybe its not the best connection,
so i will need a new one of theese, does anyone know were i can get a new 1?
i have checked all the other connections in the engine area and everything seems fine and i have recently had a new cut of valve

Re: engine hesitating, not idleing properly cutting out at the l
just had another look and i noticed that on the right hand side carb there is a little fuel coming out of i think were the carb mounts to the manifold, just underneath the bolt that bolts down the carb there is a small cylinrical tube coming out of the carb that lets out a little fuel and vapour when i press the throttle with the engine off is it supposed to do this?
wot is this part of the carb for? i have checked the left side and there is nothing connected there but fuel does not come out when i press the throttle, its hard to see into it wethere its bunged or not,
wot do you guys think? are theese supposed to be blocked or are they like fuel drainage for the carbs?

Re: engine hesitating, not idleing properly cutting out at the l

you can see the part i am talking about circled in red, it is clear to me know from this picture (wich i did not take) that there should be a little screw in there but on my right hand side carb this has obviously come out wich is why i have fuel leaking from my right hand side carb ,
problem is i dont have a screw the right size to put back in there and im not sure how i find out the right size and were i can buy 1 from?
do you think that this would cause the problems ive been having?

Looks like it could be the "basic idle mixture screw". If it's missing completely it'll certainly be messing up your mixture on that side.

Re: engine hesitating, not idleing properly cutting out at the l
yep that looks like the 1, so were do i get one of theese from then??? probly not gunna be easy, it seems there should be a tamperproof cap on them wich have both gone missing wich im sure are not gunna be easy to find, so im guessing this is probly the reason for my engine cutting out and not idling right as up untill now it has been running great so im guessing this screw hasnt been missing long, (probly since the weekend when my van started giving me problems)
thanks for your help that diagram looks pretty handy, i think ill save that
wot am i going to do about this missing screw???

Re: engine hesitating, not idleing properly cutting out at the l
If that is the "screw" that's missing it's tapered to fit into a matching jet and set at the factory to give a fixed mixture and then "sealed" to stop it getting messed about with. If you can get hold of one you'll still need to get the carb set-up properly afterwards. If it was me I'd have a word with a local tuning garage with a rolling road and see what it would cost to get the carbs checked out and balanced properly. They should be able to get spares.
The picture is out of the Haynes manual. I think you'll find it useful to get a copy.

Re: engine hesitating, not idleing properly cutting out at the l
oh
i need to double check because the van is actually running nuicely it just cuts out when i stop and gives the occasional splutter,
maybe the screw has just come loose but its hard to see with the cab still in place, im thinking surely it would barely run at all if the screw was missing, especially if it was that important?

Re: engine hesitating, not idleing properly cutting out at the l
I'm no expert on this carb but I would guess the "screw" set's the basic idle fuel mix, hence it's name. If it's missing, not only is it going to let fuel out of the carb causing a potential fire hazard, especially as it's on the hottest part of the carb. It's also going to let air in weakening the mixture at idle so the van is probably going to keep stalling if it doesn't catch fire first.
Once you put your foot down the idle mixture isn't as important because the other jets in the carb have taken over shovelling fuel into the engine, so the engine might seem to be running ok, but it could still catch fire.
If you blanked it off to stop the the petrol getting out and the air getting in that still wouldn't cure the problem. The taper seat on the original screw fits into the jet and meters the amount of petrol for the idle mixture. If it's not there the mixture will be overly rich and might flood the engine at idle and make it stall.
When you phone the carb people tomorrow ask them if putting the new screw in finger tight and then backing it out a set number of turns is good enough to set the mixture?

Re: engine hesitating, not idleing properly cutting out at the l
u know i think u are exactly right,
the engine basically stalls everytime i slow down and then when i let the cluth back up whilst im still rolling it fires straight up again and will accelerate away fine , this must be caused by the missing screw (cant understand why this screw came out in the first place, engine was running brilliantly before it did)
i will ask gower and lee but i am sure i can get the screw and tinker with it untill it runs right, only thing im worried about is my van catching fire, but the fuel only squirts out if i rev the throttle when the engine is off, i think i will have to just be extra cautious with it as i have not other car to get to work in,
