All I will say is they are great if all you want is an engine put together using parts from several other engines and a nicely painted engine.

remember the old saying you pay for what you get, some have been lucky, but many others haven't

personally i wouldnt touch em with a very long bargepole

no they dont!!

having seen some of the things they have so called rebuilt i wouldnt go anywhere near them.

they use less worn parts to repair engines not new.

vege or remtec , they are expensive for a reason

Really? I have not read anything otherwise here.
Only when the engine fitted broke down but was replaced immediately.

Lots of folk wonder how they do it for the price they do.Having said that.I have read a lot more good posts about them,than bad...

What are the options other than Elite then other than vege? Who does do a recon properly?

Ok, so after much research and many postings on this forum it came down to:

EliteVW
the Engine shop
Remtec
Vege

I have decided to go with the option that had the fewest negative review/views and have just ordered a Remtec, complete with exhaust, water pump and clutch. Fingers crossed 'cos it's costing me a mint!!!!

That's interesting. Any idea as to why that is the case?
I only ask because surely, as LPG is supposedly 'cleaner' than petrol, I would have thought it would do less harm than petrol, i.e less pollution through the exhaust,etc

All true enough Jason with the possible exception of the "no they don't" (re my saying "Most folks recommend Elite VW " - because I did say "most people" and from what I have read over the years on here and talked about at meets and shows and with Steve @ Gasure "most" folks who bought an Elite are happy with the engine and the after sales service (though some say they had to wait longer than promised to get their engine / van done)

A minority of folks might have been unlucky with their Elite engine of course and you have my sympathy if you are amongst them.

Vege or Remtec , are expensive and maybe do have more new parts in them, but they are not perfect either, again a minority of folks have got bad ones.

You pay your money and take your choice as the saying goes.

We should set up an 80-90 "poll" of customer satisfaction with the major engine recon places (Oh hang on, has that already been done ?)
