AAZ - 55 kilowatts (75 PS; 74 bhp) @ 4,200 rpm; 150 newton metres (111 ft·lbf) @ 2,000 rpm

so 2E makes same torque as an AAZ@200rpm then at another 250rpm develops a flat torque line in 'useable' range but with over 10% more torque

Isnt that engine in the last Audi A6 as well?

2E is quite an old engine now
Corrado 93/94
Golf 91/94
Passat 90/94
Vento 92/94
only late syncroTD had the breather type bellhousing, upto 89 they had the same one as 2wd and used the same poohplate so you can use 2wd parts as they are much more obtainable

Is ADY same block as 2E/JX etc ? so can use T3 sump ?

The jury is out on the JX sump, seems there was a phased changeover to a new block design around 98/99 which means it may not fit, could well be the decider as to whether I go for the "upright" installation. Flywheel offset could be a contributing factor to the use of an adaptor plate (unless the quality of what's out there is truly awful...)
Options are:
50 degree, standard diesel bell and mounts but fuel tank mod defo and possible sump mods tbc.
20 degree-ish, adaptor plate, custom mounts, leave the sump alone so the engine is totally standard.
There is a third way to the upright install - cut/rotate/weld diesel b/h and skim flywheel to correct offset but this is getting messy and would require jigging and re-machining for perfect alignment so not ideal.

Its a good option.. IIRC, fit a 1.8 GTi head (pref a TSR stage 1) std cam supposed to give good increase in torque.. Its an engine type I have been thinking about for a while..

IIRC Gordon Craig had a nice special in the back of that white Doka syncro he built.. head work and cam all for grunt, but would easly irev out to over 6k apparently..

Wouldnt it be easier and cheaper to put a MTD in it and know what you are going to get too at the end :?

I don't do diesel. I'll go straight from petrol to hydrogen or electric when the battery technology finally catches up!

Hi Silverbullet,
I spotted my name mentioned earlier in this thread which I have just come across.

I recently fitted a 1998 Golf AGG engine - this is again a 2 litre petrol but I'm not sure how it differs from the ADY version. Have you found this German website - http://ph.babelfish.yahoo.com/translate ... =Translate" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - which is based around the earlier 2E engine. It was helpful to me and I think they talk about some people using ADY engines..

I have what was a 1990 TD syncro and have put the AGG in it in the diesel fashion (ie 50 degree). It uses a MkII Golf GTi fuel pump which has a surge tank incorporated and has been OK so far including long 70-75 mph runs. I am happy with the quietness, the economy and the performance. Diesel third gear is really flexible over a wide range.

I also got a lot of help on the electrics from guys on the Golf forums but it took a long while to pull all the info together to the point that I was confident to start cutting bits out of the loom.

I am in north Bucks if you want to meet up and see what I have done. I am also happy to mail you a copy of all the data so that you can see how closely it matches your Sharan installation. Let me have an email for this.

Go for it!
Garyd

Cheers Garyd, that's all the encouragement I need :ok
Now to break the news to my good lady that I'll be breaking a car at home :run

You can comfort her by letting her know once you have broken the one at home, you'll be taking the syncro out into the wilderness and breaking that too!

I have to play this one carefully, as my beloved will have the other key  yes that's right, I'm letting her use it as a daily!
Spoiled rotten

Strewth that little 2l has nearly the torque of an ej22 despite the lack of ccs. What is the fuel economy like on the sharan engine? Is it comparable to say an ej22. Sounds like a really good conversion especially if parts are also abundant in the future. Will be watching if you start a conversion thread!
