I got the gearbox out and am going to do an oil change, however is it me or does this release bearing look worn???? bear in mind its only done about 5000 miles since i put it in, could this have been the cause of the grinding when the clutch was engaged??? Also the spindle looks pretty worn but I am guessing this is due to the spigot being knackered.

Any thoughts???

The end of the spigot shaft seems to have picked up and is knackered. I'm sure Aidan could sell you one.

so do you think that its unusable and would be the cause of the grinding noise? What are your thoughts on the release bearing does that look worn to you?

You need to feel a bearing but it never hurts to fit a new part if you are unsure and especially while you have the box out.

You deffo need a new spigot bearing and I'd replace the input shaft as that rough end will wear the new bearing pretty quick and it looks like the release bearing isn't correctly fitted to the clutch forks, but it looks like a sachs one which is the better one imho and they can readily be taken apart and regreased if they are ok and the face that mates with the clutch springs isn't foobarred (ie deeeply worn) - also judging by damp and clutch dust build up the engine front oil seal is weeping or was previously and the bellhousing wasn't cleaned when last worked on - looks like maybe the clutch fork and bearing may have been worke don as they are that much cleaner than the rest.
I'd fit a new starter bush too whilst it's off as it's easy peasy then but a t of a job insitu

Sorry for being thick, I am pretty new to all this, so knowledge and experience are very limited.

I have the new spigot bearing ready to replace, it was me that fitted the new clutch (full kit) two years ago followed the haynes guide but there was no mention of the spigot bearing, then I got the issue with the clutch grinding and was advised to change the spigot bearing. I dint bother cleaning the bell housing as I was told it wasn't worth while as no moving parts touch it.

A few points I could really do with answering and am grateful of any advise you guys can give me.

How hard is it to replace the input shaft, do I need to take the gearbox apart??
When you are talking about the front oil seal, is this the one that sits within the fly wheel???
I'll check the haynes guide for the above and the starter bush. but as I said any advise you can give will help a great deal.

I'm still concerned as I have truly diagnosed the grinding noise.

The oilite starter bush is in the hole in the bellhousing, they cost £1 from GSF and the like and need soaking in engine oil overnight ideally. http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/shop?page=s ... gory_id=99

as I said it looks like the release bearing isn't fitted correctly the right hand side doesn't look like it's clipped in properly, that could be the problem - ie it's not running flat/parallel to the clutch plate and could be causing the nosie as it's being driven on the "cock" by the clutch plate

re changing the input shaft it's fairly straightforward but does mean removing the bellhousing, should be in the wiki

Does anyone know the correct tool to remove the bolts on the clutch plate?? no mention on the wiki or in haynes? I think its some sort of star bit? I thought I had the right one but I have managed to round one of the bolts............there was a lot of swearing going on at home this weekend!!!!

If you mean the clutch cover bolts they are normally 6off short high tensile M8 setscrews (M8 x 16mm ?) with standard 13mm hex. heads.

yes that's what I meant, not sure how I am going to get the rounded one out, but they definitely aren't normal Hex or Allen??
