At least I know if I get Simon to fit me a speedshop exhaust he won't feck up the engine removing the studs

It's the 6P rule - proper preparation prevents p1ss poor performance
Sort the studs out before it goes in for fitting. More work but less grief in the long run.

Last time my engine was out cruz I removed all of what was left of the studs, drilled and retapped the holes and fitted bolts. (all except two which are not good for bolts and have to remain studs)

There was a guy on VZi who had a stunning Stainless Steel one made up for under £400 and it was very very very nice. He posted a thread guaging interest. The mods however pulled his post as they didn't like him advertising as he wasn't a paid up sponsor. I tried to send him a PM but they must have killed his mailbox too.

Slight aside...I spoke to jp exhausts when I was re-doing the Microbru's pipes. They politely said that since they supplied rjes, then anything for a subaru would have been off his fixtures and they'd rather not upset existing customers. Very honest of them. So I went to Richard anyway.
They do seem to do good work at jp. I'd have thought that if they'd made a system for any engine with a degree of popularity, they would have kept the jigs for reference?
Worth an phone call?

Fine if you're after a late system. If it's early you want then the choice is limited

upon a visit to my local zorst centre.. called Mr Tyre
I saw the pipe bender in the workshop.
I asked if they manufactured systems, yes they replied, as long as we have most of the original.
They added this practice is not uncommon as like other systems for less common cars on site manufacture is the quickest way.
"Do you do stainless" I asked ... yes came the reply £37 per metre.."what you want?" he asked.
I explained about early transporters. "ah yes four J tubes and a box, easy peasy"
He told me to bring in the original and he could "knock one out"

Yes, I agree. I had to remove engine and sort out studs in a big way, about 3 yrs ago, when exhaust last needed doing.
Recently someone posted a good point on here, stating best (and certainly sensible) practise is to replace studs and bolts at 2yr intervals. 6 x M8 35mm plated bolts (NOT stainless due to the mixed metal bonding that will take place!) and 2 x made from stud bar.
this is the way Ive gone. Im sure that if a vehicle was presented to ANY exhaust place with seized, non removable studs, then your phone would soon be ringing!

I plan to go up to Longlife anyhow, but its good to see the comments/experiences of others on here too, thankyou all.

have just phoned JP Exhausts... they DO do system for early DG engine, you just have to let them know when you order it...
am still in two minds as have this towbar to work around... so decision still not made and van still on drive ! grrr
