I spent a while looking around, and then looked on our website, home page Technical, and clicked on tyres and then the roadhaus website and read all the rave reviews about Hankook tyres.

Kevtherev, If you had read properly my replies to both Dridgy's original (last week) & present posts you would have noted that I have always
encouraged him to buy the correct tyres for his van; ie: c for commercial
& also to consult the wiki on good/bad tyres to buy.
I have always advised Dridgy & others to remember that their insurance company will most likely not pay out if they have incorrectly rated tyres on their vehicle. I have also previously stated that 'their life & their
beloved van depend on the 4 little areas of rubber in contact with the road'.
I don't know which tyre company you worked for but some of the larger
ones are just out to sell £x worth of tyres & other products even if an item is not really required. A certain 'national' tyre company in Exmouth,Devon, told my mother that one of her car tyres was 'out of
shape & needed replacing. Her partner took the tyre to a small independent tyre depot & they said that there was nothing wrong with the tyre.
Your 'sermon' on safety was directed at the converted ie: someone who
is, I would like to think, very safety conscious.

to clarify this misunderstanding, I corrected your view that the steel belt was part of the reinforcement it is part of the construction.., and you rightly pointed out that extra plies is. Then I just embelished that with some info on heat..
regarding the tyre companies that you have had dealings with, there again is a misunderstanding , you were describing tyre fitters , whereas I was describing manufacturers of which I worked for 20 years building Van tyres.
However to comment on your mothers experience a fully qualified fitter will identify bulges and hollows which are a precurser to tyre failure, as the carcass of the tyre has been compromised. sometimes this can only be felt by experienced fitters. they may describe that as "out of shape"
Having been trained in this skill I can honestly say it's not always visible to the eye.
My comments were not aimed at you personaly I too am a safety conscious lad, but there are many who read these posts about tyres have no idea how foolish it is to ignore specifications

Thanks for the clarification Kev. 
You have obviously gained a lot of experience about the construction & use of tyres during your 20 years working for a tyre manufacturer.I have
learned a bit about tyres, enough to know that it's dangerous to ignore
the proper safety issues when buying & fitting tyres.
The tyre fitter in Devon was only 18-20 years old & I wasn't impressed by him or that particular branch which has since closed. I have had 2 other experiences of tyre fitting companies drumming up business on other items eg. brake pads/discs etc. (long story!). Also one lot telling me that my wheels needed balancing when the tyres had only been fitted/balanced
3-4 weeks earlier. There are probably good & bad branches of the big tyre fitting chains generally speaking i am very wary of them.
Anyway,just watch this same topic will be back on the forum within 1-2
weeks!

During your 20 years in the tyre maufacturing business did you ever hear of a brand of tyre called 'itchyfanny' as i've been offered a set of these for £50 fitted and bolloxed, the guy said they should be ok as long as i don't drive the van because they are designed for commercial use only and meant for Television ads. They do seem quite a bargain but i would rather get a sexperts opinion on what i should do as i've always been a firm believer in the old saying 'never mind the quality give me the quantity'.
