Oil control piston rings, do i really need them?

yes
and it's wavy to double the amount of contact with the bore, the shims compleate the seal.

Not quite kev, the thinner pair of rings do the sealing, the 'wavy' bit forces the other'bits' into contact with the cyclinder wall and of course keeps them separated. as well as allowing a path for the scraped oil to pass through the piston and back down to the sump area , well thts it simplified anyhow,

Thanks for the advice i bit the bullet and bought a deglazer this morning, did the job well!

Ive now fitted all the pistons and liners, and have put one of the heads back on. I can finally see an end to the rebuild! :D
