As he said.....blowing over the fins (UPWARDS) which draws cold air from under the fridge through the front lower grille.
It's been several weeks now since the mod and so I have had chance to asess it's function and sucess or otherwise. I am very pleased with the results, the fridge is nice and cold without the racket.
I think others may have a point regarding an override 'BOOST' but for now I'm leaving it standard and operating through the original thermo switch. I'm off to Switzerland on Tuesday and understand it is very hot in europe ATM so I will see just how well this works at 30 plus C temperature. I'm guessing the fan will be on constant like it was last year in mid france when it was just as hot.....BUT WITHOUT THE VESPA AUDIO TRACK! lol.

Pardon me for being thick but does the fan switch on manually or is it wired to come on automatically when needed?

You can use a thermo switch and fix it to one of the highest fins and/or switch it manually.

All you are doing is replacing the ageing inefficient fan for something better, these fridges already come with a thermo switch so it's just a case of splicing in the new fan cables to the existing wiring.
The fan works when the thermo switch senses a build up of heat behind the fridge so typically the fan only works on warm days.

Well if it does have a fan on the rear then it must have some sort of thermo switch.

no fan on that one iirc , you could fit another thermocouple to a fan or just a switch (which would be the easier of the two)
