Spare wheel on the front?

I though you were supposed to rotate your spare too, thats why its good to use a set of 6 tyres?

Well not in the case of a Syncro. VW are clear enough when it comes to that by printing a wee diagram!

But yes, a six wheel rotation is ideal for a Syncro and I have 6 BFG MTs on Mefros for that very reason

Maybe its because nobody could afford 2 VW rear wheel carriers back in the day that they left that bit out the diagram

Cant find it at the moment, but i remember seeing a picture of VW warning sticker in someones van saying that rolling circumferences must not differ by more than 2mm.

Diff would only take out side to side speed difference, the vc would see the speed difference front to back.. even 667mm diameter would produce a 22 revs per mile difference.. doesnt sound much I know, but whenthe vc is already compensating for load/pressures turning.. I reckon it would add to the stress... Might get away with it on a brand new VC, but not a "used one"... certainly my VC wouldnt like it...

Go on then Andrew you try it and tell us how stiff the vc goes after a few miles...

VW did quote 2mm max diff in the technical literature for the Syncro

I think that's quite conservative (having run with enormous differences and VC touch wood still OK) , but that figure was indeed quoted, in the same document mention was made of braking distances being smaller than the 2WD as well as economy being no worse or even better then the 2WD due to less slip on average road surfaces (Porsche have also suggested this compensates for other 4WD drag factors)

.. and spare wheel stowage is one of the Syncros biggest achilles heels IMHO. At high speed I wouldn't like the front spare on a diesel, though maybe the TDis could be ok, know anyone tried that.. a reasonable gap between spare and grille might be better than right up tight - air does funny things!

The PO of my van used to secure the spare onto the front with a couple of long 'J-bolts' hooked thru' the grille and rotated to engage with the front panel. He did Iceland with the spare like this without any problems. The wheel was mounted like this when I collected the van from him! Didn't like it meself so I took it off. Swing-out rear carrier is on the wish list now.

I have a copy of the VW technical literature from 1988 and there is no mention of 2mm. Have you got a better / more recent copy?

Andrew, It would be a big dig to find it I think (plenty of other big digital and paper digs on the list too!)

But I've seen it several times, and believe it (or an early estimation of maximum I/O differential rpm) is also in the SAE paper I have by Dr Pesche, who researched the Ferguson/Rolt/GKN patents VW bought and then developed their version of it.

In retrospect, if vehicle prep hadn't been a pressing concern, I perhaps should have produced a History of the VC display for the event.

At the top of course would have been a picture of Tony Rolt, crouched in the loft of Colditz Castle (Oflag IV-c), designing the escape glider
