Thats what Nigel says, the only time we've stayed there I went for the week with the kids and he came up on the saturday for the BH weekend. Somebody stole our body boards, skim board and wetsuits....we'd put a gazeebo outside the tent with a windbreak around it and the wetsuits were pegged behind the cooker - somebody must've had a good mooch about to know they were there.

police and site were useless

its still a very pretty place though!!

evening all, just thought i would share my views of shell island, been there a couple of times August bank holiday last year and again the week after easter, i cant see what the problem is? i go in my camper we take our own toilet and love it! i have seen the portaloos after a bank holiday and you cant believe what people do to them, but as for everything else i dont see any problem you do get chavs but the music usually dies down at 11 ish. we usually go in the dunes our van is equipped to wild camp eg we have inverter solar panel and 2 leisure batteries, own toilet and now a shower, so for £6 each a night you cant beat it. we camp right on the beach which is one of the best beaches i have seen either here or abroad, the dog loves running round up and down the dunes which are huge. to anyone that hasnt been i would say give it a go but as said avoid bank holidays, we usually go 4-5 days at a time and will be back at the end of the month.
dont fix it if its not broke cos after you finish it will be!

All good mixed views here - thanks.

I eventually went to Dafarn Rhos campsite just up the road from Benllech bay in Anglesey.

Im still trying to make my mind up about the site - it was brilliant in its location (in the middle of nowhere but right next to an amazing beach) and safety for Fern (very secure site and very slow driving), the rules were common sense and not a problem - even if there were loads of them.

I was a bit miffed that you had to have a awning attached to the van - if it was not attached then it was breaking the law - so we couldnt use a pup tent and had to put the awning up. Why a camper van is different to parking your car next to your tent i will never know.
I was also a bit miffed that for £25.50 a night the hot water for showers/washing up was hard if not impossible to get out, and the loos were portacabins - clean, but still caravans. I've had heated floors for less.
Then there was the cheek of the owner when we checked out and picked up our deposit for the security fob (a fob has to be used for vehicles and pedestrians to get in and out of the site) when we told him we were going to park in the beach car park (£2.50 and on the beach) and he called us a "cheapskate" for not paying him £11 for the privilege. Hmmm - bizarre.

The staff (apart from the cheapskate comment) were really friendly and always around being friendly (a good way to check your not breaking the rules possibly) and to re-iterate the location was absolutely fantastic. We had a fantastic weekend and didnt want to come home. I dare say that was to do with the location, great weather and my friends - and also because we were able to camp in a quiet and safe place minutes walk from the amazing beach.

So a fantastic weekend but i couldn't get over thinking i was being robbed at every available opportunity by the campsite owners. Like being asked three times if i was going to be paying £11 to stay after 11.00am on our day of departure.

So - im still not sure. Would i go back if there werent loads of other places in the world to go? Yes.
