ahhhh, i have an AAZ alternator etc, i had no idea it would make such a difference. Is my set up affecting the mpg due to the much higher revs? bear with me chaps i have only ever had petrols before....

The aaz belt serpentine set up will give the wrong rev no and mess up your crank pulley so I've heard better off with the jx or change belt and pulleys but shouldn't affect mpg I'm getting around the guts of 10k to the litre about 30 mpg which is about right for a camper syncro it's also a high top you should be getting around the same other wise look at pump timing or your injectors return pipes could also leaking Is it smokey? Is your pump still leaking? Also what turbo have you? Aaz or jx

The pump only leaks when i pull the throttle leaver by hand, its ok if i rev it by the peddle  It runs sweet and i get good MPG i was only asking really because of my higher revs. I dont have to change gear every 5 minutes and thats a good thing for me because i am lazy

Jed, i can sow you how to adjust your rev counter so that it reads correctly with the AAZ serpentine pulley set up if you like.

I adjusted mine when i put my engine in as my old JX alternator was shagged, ended up using all the AAZ stuff instead.

FYI, i get 60mph at around 3200rpm (based on my self adjusted and no doubt not entirely accurate rev counter)

now if only you had spark plugs we could put a digital timing gun on and get a correct rev count for you, I guess there is some way of measuring the speed on a diesel other than alternator fed rev counter ?

How's the delimiting coming Paul ?

Why bother? Why not change the belt set up and stop your crank nose getting shagged by the serpentine set up ? Managed to find the problem was the inlet stub on the JX manifold that was loose took it off cleaned the flange applied gasket sealant and up to 3/4 bar straight away and now pulls like a train and no smoke :) my chargecooler fittings have been volcanoed so looks like it won't get installed till after germany but a big improvement on the 1Y just moved the airfilter to ontop and to the left of the engine bay which will live in the bottom of my westy cupboard so have room to install the chargecooler will post some pics when i can upload them as no USb key with me

Why bother?

Because changing all that engine gubbins over when you already have an AAZ set up working fine is a whole lot more difficult than slightly turning a screw on the back of the Tacho...

(plus in my case it would've meant shelling out on a new alternator, when i already had a very good AAZ one i could use.)

Tacho now sorted to read 3200rpm at 60mph, took 10 minutes and three runs getting up to 60mph to get it right. It was also free

the gear calculator I use reckons 3100 at 60mph for 215/75/15, I'll have to do a diameter adjustment to get it to 3200 if you guys are happy with that, keep it for reference
I've got the corrected 205r14c one for my van in there already against gps rather than speedo
as a matter of interest what speedo readings do you guys get at 60mph by gps/sat nav ? Since I know which speedo drive Paul has (red 21/18) it would be useful correction factor

Mine is still in km's so i always use the sat nav and ignore the speedo. I will turn it down a tad, thanks Aiden :ok I have always been afraid of going over 60mph in the past because i thought my engine was reving at 4000rpm while doing 60mph so all this is very welcome news

Mine gets 64mph on the speedo when im at 60mph on the gps.

I 'think' the drive ive got in the diff is a red one also.

A while ago i had to change the drive, thought from memory that it had a red one in it, got a new red one, only to find that when i took it apart it was a grey one that i wanted as this gave almost 'spot on' speedo>gps readings.

Will be putting a grey back in at some point in the future for sure, it was always very satisfying having the speedo reading correctly!

no these guys are talking speedo drives ie syncro front diffs, these are syncros which are effectively 4 speeds running 0.78 top gear on 5.43 final drive standard TD gearboxes
your standard 5 speed TD box is the 3H 4.83 final drive and a 0.82 top gear, your final gear is 3.96 against the syncros 4.24, but they run bigger wheels and tyres so probably evens out
