Thanks for all your help guys. 
I ended up getting a Bosch one off amazon about £40 and some sanding discs from B&Q.  I did a rubbish job of laying on some primer a couple of weeks ago.  The random orbital sander managed to get it pretty smooth fairly quickly.   I'm just doing the prep work for having a go at painting my van with a roller for £50.  I may have do some work fillng some small dings and dents.  I suspect it will come in very handy to sort that out.

Also 'assorted cord' for under £2 - ideal for anyone putting windows back in. For what its worth, I discovered that using my rectangular sand wet produced much better results. When I say wet, I mean a regularly soaped-down van. Much smoother and very fast!
