Yes, with a cobalt drill maybe, but honestly, this is not really a place to be wire-locking, nor are cap-heads the ideal candidate... would drive me maad despite liking things done properly..

..and properly is how I've outlined above and can't see why others should come undone and mine not?

Yes, I'm asking for a grande denouement this year soemtime by saying that, probably as we drive into Mammut Park for the 25th Anniv event (with a drive-shaft banging around :D )

So flat the mating surfaces off, check the drive-flange threads, clean them, deburr them if necessary, clamp everything up evenly with new bolts evenly and I can't see why it should ever come loose...

The spreaders do add a degree of locking IMHO :wink:

this thread is worring me a little as all of my drive shafts have been off and on in the last 6 months to re grese them and change the boots, added the corect spacers and the longer bolts and the nice little locking washers. already had the spreader plates. well one out of four is not too bad :(
guess i will be under the van again soon cheaking them, :D dose any one know what the torque settings are off the top of there head, have always just done them up tight, woith a 6 inch ratchet.

I wonder if the gaskets are the issue, was it really worth all that arsing about trying to get more gaskets if the dam things keep coming loose and its clicking after 3000km........ its one of those jobs you dont really want to be repeating regular.. :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl

Bentley says 33lb-ft for the rear, 26lb-ft for the front. Don't ask me why they should be different for the same joints and slightly longer bolts. I did them all to 33lb-ft, but only the rear ones came loose.

Toomanytoys: I'm also beginning to wonder whether the gaskets might be the issue. Although I think the 13.9 bolts might also be involved.
As I said, next time JK joints and no gaskets. But I'll always renew the lockwashers in future.

Cap Head screws are actually a lot easier to drill for wire locking than hex heads, and you can get away without a jig. For this application you would only need to drill one hole across the head. Single strand locking would also be ideal in this application and a hell of a lot easier to do in situ than the Double twist method. Use 0.032" wire, you don't even need wire twisting pliers. I'll try and get some piccys up to make the above a bit clearer.
