Bought mine for €6k, have since put in a new clutch (that can go in any old car), a refurb VC and one CV joint. An overhaul of the injectors will come with the next service (again something that any old diesel will need at some stage).

So far I have found the Syncro-owning experience no more expensive than running any other older car. When factoring in depreciation and the mad parts cost for new electrickery components it works out far cheaper than running a new-ish car as well.

In return, I now have the most versatile vehicle I've ever owned and the running costs are similar to a car of comparable size with treble the fun.

Just don't buy a complete heap and you should be grand.

went off roading with the surrey off road club over xmas. everyone was kind of in ore of the doka, just as caperble as everything else yet more room inside. more comfort than most of the outher 4x4. and by far the most practical. yet not much difference in size than a 110 defender.

spent around £6k on it now, some of the money was not realy nessary but i had the money at the time and if i did not buy it when i have the money when would I?

i think that i have finished all of the bodges that were carried out by the previouse owners (2). but now i have the van that i want and love, there are a few things on the list.

and i think one of the most relevernt things about spending money on these old vans, and i think that i speak for most people? it is our hobby.

i use mine daily (it' a work van as well) and have no intenshion of up or down grading depending on your point on veiw. cant see a time that i would want to sell it.

ony had mine a year now road tax due at the end of the month and still smiling

Like Neil says its a hobby, some blokes spend thousands on following a football team, season tickets, £100 down the pub after the game, away matches too, etc Personally i am the same with my doka reguarding a works van that doubles up as a camping unit in the warmer months. With the new addition of a Westy Syncro too means we can carry on all year round in much more comfort as a family. The stuff we have done and the places we go are worth all the time i have spent on them and all the money i have spent on them too. At least the little un will have good memories when he is older and will fix a mindset in his head that you just cant get by staying at home all the time. I was just looking back through what we have done in our vans last year and i thought we had'nt done much but it would seem we didnt do to bad at all really. LOOK HERE

What I have noticed over the last few days is how stable the syncro is on snow and ice. I was following one of those little Suzuki jeeps which had big MT's on. It was sliding around side to side as the open center diff let all the power go to which ever one of the wheels was spinning. The syncro just plods on, and it is very difficult on anything but polished ice to get a wheelspin. So confidence inspiring. I towed a Ford Fiesta up a 1:5 snow bound hill, it just went up. Then towed a Friendee 4x4 up the same hill, easy. It is so funny going up hills passing pedestrians waving at me to stop as they see a big old camper churning on through. 2wd really is a big disability in this sort of weather. Does mean I have no excuse not to get in to work though.

Fair point Jed about offspring. My children love our van and know that it is cool . We're going through some financial s**t at the moment, which is putting the syncro at risk ... my son was gutted at the thought of it going.

Fact is, syncros are a fundamentally cool vehicle! Mind you, I'd love a doka as well ...
