Forgive me if I repeat anything....but things that have been missed!

Tappet clearance was mentioned I know but this is important.
CO timing and carb setup
Brakes....remove front pads...free off callipers, rebuild with copperslip, general check
Remove rear drums, clean out dust, lube back plate contact points (copperslip) check for wheel cylinder weep, rebuild and PROPERLY adjust (slacken off hand brake cable first)
Change brake fluid (every two years)
Consider re-packing front wheel bearings or at least checking the adjustment
Gearbox oil only every 60,000miles
Drive belts, condition and tension
Battery electrolyte level
Battery terminals (smear with vasoline or holts non crode)
Spray WD40 into locks
Lube hinges and locks generally
Adjust washer jet aim (engine running)
Top up washer bottles
Top up coolant (Drain flush and re-fill every two to three years, longer if long life antifreeze used)
Top up power steering (if fitted)
Torque wheel bolts after refitting
Tyre pressure check and adjust


There are loads more service items but mostly these are visual CHECKS for wear/play and condition: steering, suspension, exhaust, seat belts, seat runners, lights, horn, wipers, blowers, brakes condition including flexi hoses and metal pipes, driveshafts boots etc, clutch, door closing, locks, interior and exterior lights, glove box, heater and blower controls, tyres etc

The oil filter simply uncrews by turning the whole thing anti clockwise. Sometimes you can do this by hand but often you will need a tool as they can be really tight.

This is a chain rachet but sometimes they just have a strap rather than a chain. Your local motor shop or Halfords should sell them.They wrap around the filter to give you extra purchase and leverage.

thanks Martin. My head's going to explode now!! that must take quite a while to do.

Think I'll do the basics for now and get someone to show me the other things at some point

In which case you probably won't need it and it'll come undone easily by hand. :lol:

yep, always the way! at least i'll be able to attack innocent people in the street with it or take it as an accessory to a bondage party. that thing looks mean!

All good unless your the unlucky chump (me) who has a sump bolt thats stuck.

I syphoned off a good lot, but thats gonna leave all the crud in the sump :S

I love this stuff about getting special tools to do something very simple like opening an oil filter, its all fine to have these things but by the time you have found it and cleaned it off afterwards etc you could;

twist a cloth/rag into a loose rope type shape 12-18 inches long
wind around the filter 1.5 times
pull the end that will allow anticlockwise motion to open the filter
keeping tension on other side friction will grip any oil filter

Hey presto, easiest most convenient method to open an oil filter

Not if the filter is recessed like a 2ltr.

good list but are you sure wd40 is ok for the locks? i read somewhere that graphite for the locks?
