Well I've been nursing it along for a couple of weeks - with it jamming occasionally but always been able to get it out of gear - until today when it's become well and truly stuck!
S*ds law, cos tomorrow I was going to lay it up and remove the box and let the guy who rebuilt it a couple of years ago look at it and probably replace the "splined ring" that is likely the cause - for just the cost of the part - which is £160 odd!

Re: Oil level

This happened to my first Scirocco a few years ago.
I was lucky and replenishing the oil cured it.
Moral = check oil in gearbox at regular intervals.
(note to self - check oil in gearbox on the camper !! )

Oily - not
John - yes you're right I should have checked it more often but I mistakenly believed that with it being rebuilt that it wouldn't leak.
Driving the 12 miles home last night stuck in 3rd was interesting but I got away with it and the box will come out this evening.

I once drove a Moggy Minor about 12 miles home in reverse cause it was the only gear that worked !!
I also towed a Mini Van 5 miles with my 500cc 1959 single cylinder BSA B34 !
A long time ago mind you
