Yeah I agree given ingenuity and tools you can do a hell of a lot with little money.
I havent done overly much with VW, had a beetle years back with a pinto in it, spent a summer welding up type II's. Had a split screen crewcab years back took it down to north africa and back in 70 something.
Given my nackground in trucks these a lot more acceptance in fitting different engines gearboxes, bodies etc, especially on airgrounds and in specialist stuff, bikes too, I did a major rebuild on a Norvin for someone back in the mists of time.
Done a fair bit with fords, both trucks and cars, worked for them on both.
However I honestly believe a motor vehicle is a motor vehicle and given technical information and gear its fixable.
I honestly think the notion of something needing a specialist is b/s, although I can respect someone wishing to specialise in a marque. Very good friend of mine used to restore Bugati racing cars, 20/30s ones, he was a time served fitter/turner in the Tyneside shipyards and he made things like front axles from scratch and they were shipped all over the world. He certainly never went on any 'factory courses'.
