You could buy a compression guage fairly cheaply and you and a friend could take readings fairly accurately and at least rule out more major problems. That just needs the plugs removing - not a difficult job. Then its a case of checking everything else slowly. Theres a lovely book called "Keeping your volkswagen alive" which whilst written for the bug, applies as much to your engine. The carb set up masy be different but all the principles are similar,
