That's what I was driving at HM. Is Stubbie confusing fluctuating oil pressure readings with loss of pressure that he thinks is caused by oil loss...?
The standard EJ sump only holds a whisker short of 5 lt at the high mark with a filter change anyway.
Had a (sorry about this ) STRange Rover with a 2.5 VM turbo diesel that had the oil pressure switch let go at regular intervals, along with just about every other component. Once blew the top off the switch on startup after work. Backed out to see a black trail in front of me!!!! Had to go back in and make a special blanking plug to go home.
Start at the switch and sender 'cos that's where the information about pressure originates.

The question I put to you was this:

If you don't top it up, are you sure it keeps going down ?

Try it (but be careful of course!)

Theory is that it's being grossly overfilled?

I do not believe this to be the case, that said, i'm now re-checking the level after its been parked in the same spot and and after 12 hours every 50 miles. High oil level can also lead to a low pressure, the theory being that the oil becomes aireated.

The oil pressure light symptoms could be related to the oil loss that i'm seeing on the dipstick or it could be pure coincidence. When i first experienced the oil pressure oil light i checked the oil level and it was ok.

My main concern was that prior to the oil pressure warning light problems the engine had undergone a short period where it sounded like it was running on 3 cylinders (refer original post), I have read since that a spun bearing often sounds like this, a spun bearing will cause low pressure. Of course i have now checked that the pressure is ok so a spun bearing is highly unlikely to have been the cause of rough running. If I have spun a bearing due to low oil level I will find the metal in the oil / sump when I remove it.

True, can happen to VW TD diesels and think Waterboxes too..

Windage trays help on the Diesels (and keeping the oil level correct of course)
