ive already done most of the things you are going to do with richards bellhousing etc (my caravelle and beetle are on his site but the beetle pics dont work for me)just think and plan it in your head before you do owt and if you have questions ask on here.after planning in my head and already having experiance of these (a single cab with 2.2 that runs 16.1 second qtr miles :D ) it took 4days drive in drive out .the spare gearbox idea is a sound idea i did it but not a biggie to do in the bus i did that as well.dont throw any of the engine bolts away you will need them

Thanks for all the info guy's really appreciate it, I have taken to printing off the replies in case the PC goes breasticles up :)
Got the coolant manifold off today and in the post to Richard for cutting and shutting. Klatuu have read your post's some excellent ideas especially with the exhaust I did get the down pipe/collector with my engine was going to just use the flanges but will rethink now. By gearbox pilot bearing do you mean the bearing in the flywheel if so I have the scooby one but thought I would need a different one for the VW input shaft. (have not worried to much about bearings as friends own the local bearing and belt shop :) very handy ) I'll drop you an email about the shiney bits.
Harry got all the numbers off the engine I could find, one of them was very hard to read, looked like it was m/c engraved but not very deep so had to use felt tip pens and maginifer to read it. Also made a note of the numbers on the ECU label too. The salvage yard where I got the engine will not give me the vehicle VIN because of the terms of its contract with the insurance companies :(
I didn't get any induction pipe work with my engine so the links above will be handy thanks.
Scoobyvan the beetle pic's don't work for me either but all the bus look nice.
Will be a great idea if we can assemble a list of part No's, suppliers and bits not to use maybe the info could eventually be transfered to the wiki for safe keeping when its finished.

That would be ideal...

Not sure about the salvage yard's answer, could be bullcrap, could be true.. bet if we'd both said at the time before payment, give me the VIN and I'll give you the money, things might be different. They couldn't stop you checking it out when inspecting the engine, surely, they just look the other way.. not liek you're going to publish it in the Sunday Times !

Will be fitting this in my lunchhour.

In the picture you can see the filter, the adaptor, cork gasket, and some black rubber rings to fit the filter on a smaller adaptor.
I also got some pictures of the packaging for numbers, etc.

This was ordered from the guys at www.needforspeed.co.uk and only cost about £15.

I feel another purchase coming on...... and then some fabrication work to seal it off from the engine bay behind the n/s lights..... could you just see whether it will physically fit into that hole, please?

Cheers.

Mmmm those bits look nice especially at the price, have you used the scooby bits between the throttle body and Mass air sensor thingey or did you turn your Induction manifold around. Klatuu.
Going back to the VIN problem have just spoke to a local salvage yard and they say they can not supply VIN or REG numbers and this not normally an issue because 98% of the spares go into a similar vehicle and youcan quote your own VIN  however he did say if I am interested in the Scooby STI WRX engine he has in a vehicle I might like to come and see it running and bring a pen and paper to take information ie: dimensions of the engine  to make it will fit in my vehicle.
Started a little black book with all the info this thread is generating in case it goes off into the ether, I will have a hard copy sowe still put itin the wiki

The big square hole where I have my expansion bottle, Oh I imagine it will easily fit, I got the whole car so I had my pick and choose of bits and I got the whole induction system, I am using it at the moment, I've not turned around the inlet manifold, but if I can get a new bracket for the alternator I might have a go at that.

I think my Subaru dealer can get parts from the cars registration, what size of engine and year was the car you got the engine from? The next time I'm at the scrappy I'll get some vin's

After Lunch addendum:
Ok Its installed :D <mental note - use shorter bolts> looks good, what more can i say, Oh yes forgot to measure it, but the box it came in is 12cm x 12cm x 16.5cm, it will fit into the side pod (pointing into the pod - transverse to the van), but if it is to go in lengthways it might be a bit of a tight fit.

Looks nice, probably just fine, but make sure the filter particle size removal is similar to the Subaru one - with hot-wire and hot-film anemometers (velocity~density afm), the tiniest particles can damage or upset the output - lots of problems with high performance Subarus with some aftermarket filters, hence the Rally ones stayed with older style afm's which aren't sensitive in this way.

WEAZLECHIN no need to get your coat mate the more heads the better :) besides which "proper" engineering solutions need all the exposure they deserve IMHO.
Spoke to Andy at Grade A Subaru who supplied my engine and bits and the reason I was supplied with a Legacy loom is that it's a work around because my engine has a immobiliser built into the loom and ECU that can't be removed so you have to keep the key transponder with the imobiliser receiver all the time. Anyway they going to send the Impreza loom to me and I'll see if I can remove the immobiliser components or work it into the VW loom and use it as an immobiliser.
Klatuu if you can get a couple of vins or reg numbers from your scrappy that would be great especially off of a 1997/98 Impreza with a 2ltr engine
but don't get into any bother
Does anybody know if "normal" motor factors carry service items like cam belts filters etc or is it all main dealer stuff as my nearest dealer is a 40 mile trip :( away.

I'd also liek to know where common Subaru service iotems can be found, other than Subaru dealers... mind you, peeps over the big water keep saying don't mess with anything other than genuine Subaru, but I'm sure we'd at least like to know what might be available at half the price :?:

No luck finding scooby service bits at my local motor shops Harry :(
On a brighter note DHL made two deliveries today one the Imprezza harness and the other was 2 packages from RJES with all me bits for the mating of the scooby engine to the VW transaxle yiiipppeeeeeee me very excited sorry :D
Think I will make a start on the harness tomorrow, already started the legacy one but prefer to use the impreza one, has anybody found a way to integrate the immobiliser into the VW ?
