SOunds like the warm air feed for the intake.. nothing to do with heating the interior..
Tubes are on right hand side of engine bay connected to the air filter etc? Yes???
These should go onto the "casing" on the exhaust, but the "casing" usually rot away... best thing to do is remove them... Do you have a square air filter housing or oval??
A picture of the engine bay would help a lot....

But getting a Haynes manual would also help...

DG engine. 1.9 water cooled as far as I know.................??

Square is an early DG airfilter housing...

I don't know but it won't help to get any warm air out of the cab heater. Did you check the heater control cables? A Heynes manual would help you too.

Yep. they run ok without.. My syncro hasnt had them on for 4 years and the caravelle 9 years.. been used in much colder weather than we get in the UK without issues..
