M18 is last stop, no more room after that, if you don't need to don't go to it.
I never drill before I tap, I just put a leader in with a stepped drill bit, theres not much material there.
Once drilled/tapped then pour a load of oil into the engine to get it to flush the swarf out.

I learned a lot Simon and thankfully I have an escape route if needed.
I shall indeed be using a lead with the M18 one or not at all depending if I can get the tap to start.

Luckily I don't have a sump plug problem (yet), but I like to learn...

Just to confirm procedures re the swarfe thing,

So I take it that pouring say a gallon of (old ?) oil through the engine with the (new) sump plug out is sufficient to wash any swarfe out of the drain hole, yes ?
Got a new van, but it's a 165bhp T4 [shock horror] Accurate LPG Station map here

When I drilled the swarf drops downwards
to help it there's a steady trickle of oil seeping out of the drain as well
I didn't completely go all the way.. which meant the drill never went inside the case

when tapping I simply filled the tap flutes with grease which captured the cuttings

I'm pretty confident nothing went in
