It has turned into one of those jobs you wish you never started!!

Same old story we are afraid.

There are ways to help get the bolts off but it's not good to cry over split milk.

Jeez, feel sorry for you as the exhaust bits will no doubt have cost you enough all ready :(

If a recon really is right out of the question, stay around here and get a used one.
It is unlikely anyone on here will knowingly sell you a bad one :)

And please, before embarking on almost anything on your van, ask on here :ok

Thank you all for your help, i'm going to have a go at getting the stud out as i have nothing to lose by trying, if i cant do it i'll have to look for a second hand engine.

Thanks again

Always ask on here for an opinion of the person you are buying off. I got stung but was helped out by some very decent folk! I think if you are buying a recon engine you should be OK. Just be VERY careful buying second hand, especially unseen!!!
Kevtherev just gave you a great bit of advice.
How about a diesel whilst you are at it? Great economy!
Good luck!

Don' t know if this is true but I heard that the bolts are designed or if not usually snap off at the highest point, so if you remove the head completely you may be able to weld something to the protruding bolt and and still remove it. Worth looking into .

From what I've seen, they tend to snap where head meets water-jacket.
Local garage is having ago at one....two bolts snapped & they have tried welding bolts on 4 times now! It is way down inside casing now & they are giving up. Re-con to be ordered.

Thanks for all your help and advice. After reading all the comments i was getting a bit worried but failed to believe it was a case of give up and get a new engine. So i thought id at least have a go and welded a nut to the end of the stud, to my surprise it turned straight out, i was expecting it to be a nightmare, maybe i was just lucky?

Thanks again to all that replied

Fraid this is very true.

Do read that thread I linked to earlier on.

The guy did the re-build you are looking at and posted a lot of good info.

Good luck
