Cheers oldie, I've got to make a trip to Halford to get some bits. Some kids have slashed my tyres so got that to sort out as well. I'd like to say what I thought of them but probably banned from here!

So the saga continues....

I have just put in a 16A fuse and thankfully the fuse didn't melt! The fan came on as normal as I heard a few clicks and I also noticed the 12V battery LED on the timer was on too. I looked underneath a some smoke (not really thick) came out and it ran for quite a a minute before I started to smell fuel, smelt like uncombusted fuel. The smoke by this point had stopped and I couldn't really feel the air getting warmer, then the fans stopped and the thermostat lights went out. Went over to check the fuse and it was still intact and realised I could switch the fan on still, must've been a cut out on the eber.

I have also checked the glow plug and it seems intact. I noticed when I went back to the van to check the glow plug what when switching on the heater there was no clicking, but the fan still came on. Does this look like I'm gonna have to get it all open?

If it has not been run for some time it may need two or three start-ups to get it running again. Try removing the fuse for a few seconds and try again (this should reset the brain if it has locked out - I am not sure if your model locks out or not as I only have a German manual and don't speak German). Your pump is obviously working but might not be putting enough fuel into the heater (air in fuel line?). The glow plug can be tested in a couple of ways - remove it and put 12v across it for a few seconds and see if it heats up (watch for burnt fingers!) or put an ammeter (20A) in line with the fuse and hopefully you will have 12A or so going through at start up. I would have thought that the glow plug is working as you have had some smoke issuing - most probably white as true ignition didn't happen and the fuel was merely warmed.
The fact that just the fan only came on when you retried it may have been the heater carrying out a purge cycle.
Persevere with several startup attempts before going in. :D

Thanks for the advice!

I have just been round my friends house who has a club joker and he showed me his eberspacher. Sounds the same and smells the same so will try running it again tomorrow. Found out that its not normal for an 88 westy joker to have a timer on it so looks like a custom electrics job hence the strange wiring.

Checked it this morning and its only running for a minute or so and then shutting down. Fuses all still intact. Will try some of your tests.

I also found out yesterday that the cable that was blowing the fuse was not going to the heater but going to position 4 on the control unit. This would make sense as its the cable that has the 16A fuse on it. Do you have any idea on where that cable goes after that or is it just providing power to the control unit?

It feeds relays like these and is then sent out - the white one being the main one.
You will need to give it several goes to ensure that sufficient fuel has been pumped to the burner. Have you got the thermostat turned up full?

I think because I haven't had the engine going for a week (bloody flat tyres) the leisure battery is very low and the eber is shutting down due to the fact it is pulling too much current that the battery can't provide. Hoping to sort out the tyres today so will go for a spin in it and top up the battery and give the eber another go.

Finally! Its all working, the battery was low and hence the reason it started before and then conked out. Got the battery charged and voila!

Thanks for all your help, really appreciate it : )
