looking at the diagram and your pictures blue I would agree with peasent that you have the early integrated dipstick and it has been lost for some reason , if that is the case you could put an add in wanted section , never know someone may well have one sitting in a box somewhere .

good luck

GREAT!!!!!!
Thanx for all your help guys.

Just to clarify, do i need:

  • to remove the bolt and fit a dip tube and later dipstick?

  • or find an oil cap with integrated dipstick?

  • or does it matter?

How much do you want for the hole WELDORE ? I havn,t got one of them. Seriously though I think its really good how folks on here rise to the occasion and help out, it restores your faith in human nature, in the VW world we live in anyway. I might still have a dip tube and stick but it is the short one where you will have to lift the engine cover to check oil level, if I can find in in my accumalated spares heap I will get back to you.

I have heard folk complain about "how the vw community isnt the same as it used to be" i think they are obviously looking in the wrong place! i have had my bug 10 years and loved every second of ownership, never been let down by a fellow enthusiast. I bought my van less than a month ago and was a little hesitant about the lack of support etc but have been well and truly proved wrong. Thanx to all who have helped so far, i am sure that i will have many more questions on the route to an MOT pass sheet.

And if anyone has a dip tube and stick knocking about there is one very gratefull member sat here in need one! 8)

i think it may be possible to get it off while under the van...but you might need an umbrella.
.
mind you dont drop the nut into the crank when you try undo-ing it...but it may just be threaded in the lump..i dont really have a clue about that though as im a bit tick 8)
i'd let you have my diptube but im gonna be using it ...good luck tho

just noticed ya just up the road from me :ok

I'm not entirely sure...but i believe that there are two different sumps to go with the two different filler/dipstick setups.

Can anyone confirm?

I had the integrated oil filler pipe and dipstick on my 82 1.6d. When it cracked I couldn't get a new one for olve nor money and I tried everywhere.

After much, much help and advise from people on here I ended up replacing the filler pipe with one from ebay that fit but had no dipstick. I kept my old dipstick and fixed a big plastic disk round the top just below the handle/ loop. I then filled up with oil and marked on the dipstick where the oil reached when it was pushed into the filler tube as far as the disk would allow. I just kept the dipstick in a box in the boot.

Not perfect but it works and it would mean you'd just need to make a dipstick, and not have complicated sump changes to undertake.
