Titus...
Yeah...but if it goes boobies upwards as they say...you can still drive your bus!! I NEED it for Bashtie!!
But, have just ordered the gasket and circlip from VW, will be in tomorrow, and the spigot bearing will be in this afternoon. So maybe we will be brave and "crack on"
Tis upto hubby though, as he is the one that will have to do it.

Em, be aware that the spigot bearing has a tiny seal in it, this (and the writing round the edge) should be on the outside off the crankshaft not to the inside. When me and Mark T'onion fitted our first one the thing burred over causing much straining and swearing when we put the engine back in and out and in again and out again

Oh how we laughed
Ian.

Ahhh...more valuable tips!
Just to make sure that I have this right...the writing round the edge - should this be visible once the thing is in?? So hold it with the writing facing us, and using a 8mm spocket as a drift slide it gently in?
Thanks again....
this support has been invaluable!

Ian....
thanks!
Will go steady with the sliding....so hopefully no straining in and out as you and T'onion suffered!!
(is it me...or could that be a contender for the all new SMUT forum!!

)
Will update on progress later.

Quick update if anyone is still reading
Ok, so hubby and Richard have been hard at it (on the gear box you naught naughhty naughty lot!)since half three this afternoon.
Got the spare DK out of the garage, and yep, you guessed it, the main input shaft on my gear box is completely cream-crackered. So, not going to get away with putting it back
Thanks to Aidan's instructions, they have got the input shaft off the spare. Gasket and circlip ordered, with spigot bearing from VW, so hopefully tomorrow they can crack on with opening up the five speed and replacing the gear input shaft.
Got the gear box oil to drain down and replace as well.
Oh the joy!
Take care, and best wishes to anyone under a van tonite!

They need to be VERY carefull NOT to hit the crankshaft as they are case-hardened and can crack. We used a sharp 1/4" chisel, a pin punch and lots of VERY bad language.
Ian.

Juts collapse the outer case inwards once you've chiselled down the side of it, like this...
