Each to their own, but personally I'm with jamesc76 on this one. Use the proper refillables or a proper gas tank or keep on exchanging bottles.

There's a reason that properly refillable bottles are available at a cost; this cost is also the reason why someone will always come up with an adapter to make something do what it shouldn't (or that we shouldn't do with it anyway!!) Having used badly refilled bottles in Spain, every town has somewhere that will will refill just about any bottle, I am accutely aware of the potential for leaks etc.

Looking at gas prices locally it costs me under a tenner extra to get a proper exchange Propane bottle rather than fill mine again from a pump so it would be four refills to recoup the cost of the adapter (or about eighteen to recover the cost of a proper refillable bottle). I'm usually pretty tight with my money but on this one I'm happy to pay the extra and keep getting genuine swapped bottles, if only to keep my insurance valid in case of a gas explosion....

Thanks for the info guys.

Not sure about trying to refill non-refillable bottles (if you know what I mean) in a petrol station. But doesn't sound very safe despite attractive long term savings.

However, I've just paid £18.00 for a 4 kilo butane bottle and thought, bugger mine, that's a bit steep. :? Same was about three quid cheaper last year from the same place.

That's the equivalent of 10 exchange cylinders based on last Spring's price and you've got it for ever. We used to go through 2 or 3 of that size per year.

To me the biggest plus point though is the ability to top-up the tank so you know how much gas you've got onboard instead of having to chop in a part-full cylinder  because you fear it may not last your holiday and you can't get an exchange (i.e. in France, Germany etc etc where they have different fittings).

Gas is not a thing to try and do on the cheap IMHO. :run
