Hi Harlequin i think they are only for the right side, but i've found a picture with a carrier on the left side. I'll write the owner an e-mail.

Hi again,
i have got an answer, the original carrier was only made for the right side of the T25. Others are self-made.
Here is a picture of an austrian syncro with two carriers:

I wondered if a rear ladder could be easily modded to also hold a spare wheel - this'd end up not dissimilar to that $350 one on hacksawbob's telusplanet link (but loads cheaper, as there must be a few of these knocking around second hand?)
This is one of my issues to sort out in the conversion of my new syncro panel, but there are PLENTY more (starting with VC!)... Got 15" rims now, tyres are next...

smokeyjon, thats a good idea, just as easy to fit a wheel holder straight to the tail gate and use copper pipe trick.
however really want a swing away. this is all about looks for me, i dont have a syncro, its a transporter. but want spare wheel with semi solid cover, ally ladder up to a ally roof rack, will look coool if i can ever get the bits together

The genuan VW spare wheel carrier was made in a left and right side
fitment.I have bothe on my 16.
They where only factory fitted to left hand drive vehicles but sold for the oposite side for right hand vehicles for an after market fitment.
And they where available(no longer)at a price of over £1000
They are extreemly sturdy and well mounted.
If u find one for sale i suggest u grab it.
