Having wiring going to a push button on the dash like this is the worst kind of back street wiring bodge and my recommendation would be to stop using it until it is properly and safely sorted.

not my design or doing - previous owner, OK yes I've had the van four years

Mocki wrote:is you battery in the engine bay?
just run a nice thick (jumplead size) cable from the + on the battery to the buz bar with everything switched off, then after 45 secs disconnect it and turn it over
if its not in the engine bay, try the jumper pack, but be very carefull not to short anything out.....
battery is in the back - tried a big fat bit of cable - left it for 45 sec - 1 min. Turning but not igniting - guess glow plugs are shot??
I'm not gonna tackle them in the dark

If you want to know for sure, it should def strta after 5 minutes with a hot air blower (or hair dryer) in the end of the filter cannister, just whip of the end cap and wam the box and all the air in it. Bet it will fire!
If you've got fuel...

Wont start if two or more are blown tho.

No frequently won't but tends to puff and blow a bit whilst trying!
All this depends on air temps...

Its running
All four glow plugs were black and wet - changed them and also managed to get an assistant (the lovely Heather) to press the silly glowplug button on the dash whilst I probed with the multimeter. I'm only getting 4.5v. BUT if I the ignition is on I only get 0.2v

Gonna get a relay from the scrappers today and wire one in, found a simple diagram to follow - only fun one will be the light on the dash as I have petrol clocks.
Thanks for the help and pointers

Just remember; if you are not using the original relay, whatever you use must be up to the job, heavy duty and the same goes for the wiring and connections. This circuit is demanding lots of amps and so all connections need to be spot on, preferably soldered etc using heavy gauge wire to avoid the excessive voltage drop you are experiencing at the moment but more importantanly to avoid an electrical fire.

..
i just powered my light off the same feed as the buzz bar for my light, so it was on when the uzzbar was live, that way i knew the power was getting to the glowplugs.........

Any idea what number the Glow plug relay is (if it has one) gonna have to look at some Golfs and Seats in the scrappy - also, where would they be?

Yes Louey, take a look here... No. 258 pretty sure
Also note the size of the screw contacts... good heavy sized crimp connectors with screw-hole tags are sufficient, with 50 Amp alternator sized cable.

looking for one that has these terminals

I'm guessing that is the same pattern as the VW one??
Otherwise, what relay can I use and how much different would the wiring be?
