Can't resist the spanner in the works., sorry..
If you've got the money, consider a 2.2 EJ22 Subaru LPG conversion... or even a 2.5. That should tour comfortably, if the conversion is done well.
Diffs, maybe wait and see, its not essential that this be changed immediately is it, unless the box is fopared anyway. First of all, do you know what its got (code) already?
If you haven't scanned through it already,
Subarus for you - maybe even a 2.2

Hi all. It left factory as petrol powered.as for the Subaru option I have looked at that but my fear is if I had a problem down the line I would want to able to fix it on the side of the road without my Snap On box with me and find bits local. As for the gearbox it has not got one. That is why I ask the question I may as well get the right one for the job now and be done with it.
Match the gearbox to the engine and the needs I have.

hi there
very informative stuff here.
i'd like to chuck in a supplementary question here. i have a 1987 t25 4 speed hi top with 2.1 injection with about 225,000km on the clock. i've done about 80,000 km in four years and love the thing. however she ain't cheap to run up and down the UK in and I am wondering how the fuel economy might be improved on the 25ish mpg i get now by converting to the 1.9 TD i have in my scrappy passat [with about 111,000 miles on the clock].
i need some mpg type info here if anyone knows.

I would like to think that you would get a good 30 plus out of it, I would think more, again it depends on how you drive
If you got the engine out, you might aswell and go through and give it a mini overhaul.
Replace rings & oil jobbies, polish the piston heads, barrels etc, check the bearings top and bottom, valves make sure they seat properly and have good clearance.
Decoke set of gaskets, replace senders oil & water temp, etc etc
Its alot easier to do it when there is no pressre than having to do it when its let you down and the pressure is on. You know when its your on the moors, its raining, cold, your late etc etc
Have fun Kris

NB. Don't think Kris means polish the bores themselves. If you re-ring it, you're best advised to coss-hatch hone the bores, glaze-bust at a minimum. Use a new ring to estimate the bore wear at the worst spot (just below the step), as outlined in the service manuals... if it's outside the limits, which I doubt it will be, best look for another block.
If its running strong and clean now a cam-belt and a check of the cam and tappets might suffice, possibly a new oil pump.

thanks kris. hmmmm. with the price of diesel v petrol it might not be the major saving i am after then....i pay 1.26 a litre in scotland for diesel at the moment.
i tend to drive mainly on the motorway and do about 65/70. by the way, as i understand the 4 speed box i have now isn't much better ratio'ed for cruising than the 5 speed, but someone may have a different view.
i guess i'd like to get 40+ mpg, but maybe that's a pipe dream
