before I blew up the TD my 1.6 JX would do 43mpg on a motorway run and mid to low 30's pottering.

Well.. each vehicle is slightly different..

most fuel gauges will register full for a while and then start to drop..

as for reserve.. well if its hitting red then you are getting low, unless you can only get 30L in in which case its a fault..

15l in reserve, is fine.. surely its better to tell you you are getting low before it runs out.. I wouldnt want it to run out within 20 miles of hitting red... 15L will get you 50 miles easy if driven sensibly...

only way to calibrate it would be to make sure its empty and add 5L at a time and see what the gauge reads.. on level ground..

Thanks Mr.H. I think part of it is that i'm still finding the mileage to be amazingly better than my expectations.

After it's been serviced, it'll be a dream....and i'll be able to drive with the confidence that I have done my best for an 18 year old camper which has done about 30,000miles on a new engine from V.A.G. the tight burgers could have put a Porsche engine in...duh!!!

2.1 wasserboxer 16 to 20 pottering around, 22 to 26 on an economical run.

1.6TD JX 31 to 35 pottering and up to 46mpg on a run, depending on your right foot (high tops will be a few less especially at speed, due to poorer aerodynamics)

I looked at the gauge in my 1.9DG yesterday and found it registering empty. That's not right, I thought, only put £30 the other day. Bashed the instrument housing on top and up she came!

Normally I use my 1967 Riley Elf as daily driver, and I do 25 miles each way. The tank is so small I can only go three days between fillups, and I have been known to run out within a mile of the filling station. A can in the boot is an essential item in that one, even though its fuel consumption is half that of my bus!

£20 for half a tank of Diesel down at ASDA's in Brighton Marina. Allowing for a freakily shaped tank, it could be a £50'er.

I still want to bung in a load of veg oil but i'll wait until I check it out more thoroughly.

Someone suggested a twin tank conversion with element etc today. Where would the extra tank go?!
