Never seeing them work dosn't help me :( but i thought they blocked the air flow so the engine warmed up then moved out the way to allow cooling
exactly the opposite m8,,, the thermostat physically pulls them into a position so that the engine cools less,, they are sprung to the opposite position (cools more) so that if the cable fails or the thermostat the engine cools properly.. you need them in and sprung but you don't need them to move

I had a 2ltr cu devon automatic 2 years ago.It had a low mileage volkspares recon engine aprox 12000 miles .It was leaking oil from various places i removed the engine to sort the leaks. After removing the tinware some of it missing i discovered no cooling flaps. There was evidence of overheating on the heads and the crankshaft oil seal was hard & brittle.I took off the cylinder heads and discovered burnt exhaust valves & the rockers smelt of cooked oil. This was due to no flaps directing air around the cylinders&heads and overheating oil.I obtained the tinware & flaps from 80 90 members i advice you to get them .

OK, haven't checked the wiki yet (naughty me) but where can I find a photo of the flaps in the 'low cooling' and 'max cooling' positions so I can compare?

Think I need to check my flaps :!:

E D I T: I checked the wiki. 'tis all in there. Sorry to bother you! :)
