Hi
Don't know if you have children (which may help with my suggestion) but another way to look at it is to reverse the roles.
How would you want your children to react if you were in your father's position?
I agree with the injection of humour as suggested above, honesty does not have to be brutal.
My own experience is a built in wardrobe that was christened "the leaning cupboard of Piza" by my then 8 and 10 year old sons. Treasures, and they should be buried
Good luck.

I'll finish mine off, you can look at it and then compare it to yours! you'll think your's is great compared to mine, then it won't matter!
Brilliant eh? :P

I'm building my own cabinets into my converted panel van, so you won't be the only one with wonky cupboards!

I lost my dad in June, I would pay HUGE amounts of money to have him build me a wonky cupboard. Its a memory you will have foreva. (remember the time dad built me wonky cupbards) I critised my dad once, he was really upset saying "I'm and engineer i know what i'm doing" I still feel guilty.

Say nowt, and smile lots and give him a huge hug, and an i love you when its done :D

Then after using until it drives you crazy, tear it out and build it right!

Take lots of pics of it first to keep for posterity.

I'm going round there tomorrow (camper is on his drive until we sell our caravan) so i'll let you know if I'm brave enough to say anything, i might have to though, he's now saying that he's going to use the wood from an old cupboard or desk thingy thats been in his shed forever - so not only will it be wonky, the wood won't match either  . I don't think that he's loosing his marlies, he's too young; but i think that his 'quality standards' have slipped slightly in recent years.

It must be hard for you scoobybuz :( , I can't imagine not having my dad around, even though he drives me potty - i luvs him to bits and i would hate to upset him - you never know whats round the corner.

- if it were MY kids, they'd just roll around laughing and pointing, but I'm not as horrible as them!!!!

Phew! it went ok - although he did call me anally retentive!!

I just asked him outright if we could fix it & he said that it was straight, so i took this photo.

We've spent the day trying to make everything fit together, not easy when its freezing cold and access to the side door of the van is restricted. Getting there though.

I've also told my dad - DO NOT put any wood that does not match, or is scabby near the van!! he's found (in a skip) some ply that he thinks would make a good work top :? its all warped and manky so i've offered to take it back to the skip tomorrow

Hey Scoobybus, I too lost my Dad in May last year. Like you, there is nothing I wouldn't give to have him back regardless of the fact that he lived to the ripe old age of 88. It still hits hard. I thought he'd live forever. Also like you, I keep thinking about those times I upset him and feel dreadful.
Quite right. Leave it as it is. Something quirky & personal that only he could have done, even if it does irritate the hell out of you! Damn, it's only a cupboard!

I don't see what the problem is, just park it on a slope so that it ends up level

It's wonky and it would drive me nuts! So.........

buy your dad a try square, a spirit level and a really kooool screwdriver, preferably motor driven. Wrap it as a gift set and let him have loads of fun putting his new tool kit to use - getting those damned units square!

No Chance!!!!

my dad has more tools than screwfix!! I only found out yesterday that he has a table saw that "cuts really straight" - why he didn't use it i havn't a clue. plus he's extremely dangerous with a power tool, its a wonder he has any fingers left!

like most girls, i thought my dad was brill at everything - but I've found out that woodwork is not his forte. he's still brill at everything else (!) but i've banned him from cutting another piece of wood without me being there.
this week He ruined the worktop that i bought by cutting it wonkyer than a dogs hind leg and splintering all the laminate off.

I'm off to do some more work today, on my own - but when its finished, i'll let him have all the credit and i'll tell everyone that my dad made my interior!
