just been out having a look at the 1y prior to taking it apart. Noticed the flywheel (which was detached from the engine when I picked it up) looks nothing like the jx (or sb) flywheel. A pressure plate is attached directly to the crankshaft. I dont have any history of where the engine came from (bought with doka) guessing it could have been out of an auto....any ideas ?
Also, put a breaker bar on the 19mm bolt on the front crankshaft pulley and pulled very very hard... didnt budge any ideas what torque these are done to? .....go on tell me its left hand thread.
cheers
All 1y's have back to front clutches, use the jx flywheel and clutch.
19mm bolt is 90Nm then further 90 degrees and is a once only bolt.
Pneumatic Impact wrench for (removing) that 19mm IMHO... even then took a helluva lot of time to start to loosen.
Or a pudlok over a T-bar, but its stopping the engine turning the name of the game - take sump off and wedge the crank with a block of wood is my advice (but interest rates go down as well as up).

Oh yes.... had some fun with that 19mm mofo, got the blood to prove it!
Made up a crank stop by welding a bar to the old clutch pressure plate which bolts straight to the crank. Jesus was that tight.
As the engine is out, thinking of wacking in a new clutch and have heard the 228mm from the 2.1 waterboxer will fit and give a good upgrade. Want to tow with the vehicle. Can anyone shed some light as to whether this clutch is ok for the 1.9td

Lots of options on clutch JX is easiest and will be fine unless you plan on increasing power.
definately like to increase power for towing. If I could get 80-90 hp on the 1Y+turbo+injector adjustment, then I'd be a happy bunny. Will look for a TDI in good time but for now the 1Ys going in and the clutch is looking tired so needs replacing.
Could anybody give me some guidance on suitable alternatives......ta!

To me the best alternative is a early tdi flywheel or a petrol one out of a 3a passat, have 16mm machined off the back and then run with a waterboxer clutch plate and tdi clutch cover this setup is very strong.
